These are physical, electronic devices that are engaged in conversation and link network segments and nodes (points of intersection like network interfaces, end devices, and networking junctions). There are different types of these devices, but the fundamental three necessary for network accessibility are Network Interface Cards (NICs), routers, and modems.

Network Interface Cards (NICs)

The Network Interface Card, typically abbreviated as NIC, is a pivotal device that makes it possible for computers to connect to a network. Fitting inside a computer, it serves as a conduit for data between the computer’s internal circuitry and the external networks. It converts the data produced by the computer into a continual network signal transmitted over the networking medium and, inversely, can turn network signals into data understandable by a computer. Modern NICs offer wireless connectivity, adding to user convenience by removing physical cable limitations.


Routers are network devices that forward data packets between computer networks, creating an overlay network of shared pathways. They perform traffic directing functions on the Internet. A data packet is typically forwarded from one router to another until it reaches its intended destination. Routers are also integral in protecting networks by creating a firewall and securing data being transferred.


The modem is another critical device involved in network connectivity. Short for Modulator-Demodulator, a modem is a hardware device equipped to convert data into a format suitable for transmission. For example, if you use a digital Internet service, your modem converts the digital signals from your computer into analog signals that can travel over your Internet Service Provider’s lines.

Apart from these, there are additional networking devices like repeaters, gateways, and switches that help in maintaining and managing networks.
