Small Kitchen Remodels: Big Impact, Little Space

Filed under: Kitchen Home Improvement — Admin @ 2:53 pm

Unleashing Your Small Kitchen’s Potential

Many homeowners might feel restricted with a small kitchen. Space limitation becomes a challenge indeed, but do not let that curb your creativity. An optimal mix of aesthetics, compact design, and functionality is essential for small kitchen remodels. The key to achieving this is to find the right balance between storage, design, and kitchen appliances.

With the help of a kitchen designer, you can transform your small kitchen into an efficient, stylish, and inviting space. The right design can make your kitchen appear larger and more open, reflecting your personality while providing all the function and convenience you need.

Maximize Your Space

Start by recognizing that every corner of your kitchen has the potential to be a useful space. Built-in appliances, pull-out cupboards, wall-mounted knife racks, and magnetic spice containers are just a few examples of how to exploit every inch in your kitchen.

With a tailored approach, your kitchen designer can utilize ingenious solutions to make the most of your kitchen space. One popular approach is the use of vertical space. Tall, stacked cabinets grant plenty of storage room, leaving the floor area open for movement and cleaning.

Play With Light and Colors

Light and color play a vital role in kitchen remodeling, especially for small kitchens. Bright and neutral colors can make your kitchen feel larger, while bold colors can make it appear cozier. Consider using different shades of white, beige, or gray for a charming and elegant kitchen.

Just like colors, natural and artificial lightening patterns also alter the perception of space. Add a window if possible, or add under-the-cabinet task lights that brighten up your countertops, amplifying the overall light in the room. Talk to your kitchen designer about the best lighting options for your kitchen.

Choose Appliances Mindfully

Great cooking does not require large appliances. Reduce the size of your kitchen gadgets to increase counter space. Opt for a compact refrigerator and an under-oven microwave. Moreover, multi-purpose appliances are a small kitchen’s best friend, saving a lot of space while performing various functions.

Invest in Flexible Storage

Flexible storage is another strategy that a professional kitchen designer might suggest. Retractable shelves, sliding doors, mobile kitchen carts, and hanging pot racks let you maximize storage without cramping up space. A smartly arranged kitchen addresses both aesthetic purposes and functionality needs.

Conclusion

Remember, having a small kitchen doesn’t have to mean settling for less. All it takes is some clever design and maximizing your space. Work closely with your kitchen designer to choose finishes, colors, and appliances that reflect your style and fit your budget while simultaneously ensuring functionality and comfort in your kitchen.

Small kitchen remodels may sound tough, but with the right planning, they can be a fun adventure. The result is a kitchen that not only fits your cooking needs but also becomes a part of your home where family and friends love to gather.

Unblocking A Toilet : A Step By Step Guide

Filed under: Kitchen Home Improvement — Admin @ 3:24 pm

By Mark Thomas Walters

Your toilet becoming blocked is at best annoying, and at worst a nightmare. Still, there is no need fret, or think that you will have to spend a fortune on a plumber, as it should not be too difficult to unblock it yourself.

Before attempting to unblock it yourself, it is important to first protect the area around the toilet with either some layers of newspaper or some old sheets. Hopefully, they will not actually be necessary, but it is better to be safe than sorry. You should also make sure that you the right tools for the job – at least rubber gloves, a bucket and a plunger.

Once you have those things in place, proceed as follows…

Warm water alone can sometimes be enough to shift the blockage, so try slowly pouring half a bucket of it into the toilet. If there looks like there is some movement, then try another half bucket. If there is no movement at all, or if there is some but not enough, then you will need to get your plunger out.

Using your plunger try pushing backwards and forwards into the toilet. This push-pull motion is needed to try to force water through the blockage and break it up. Different plungers offer you different chances of success so choose your plunger carefully (if unsure, ask for advice at your local hardware or DIY store).

A plumber’s snake is a flexible clearing rod that has a hand crank attached to it, that can be used to break up, or suck up, blockages. You may well not already have one, as they are not common in most households, but it is a worthwhile investment as they are not expensive and you can obviously re-use it for blockages in the future. To use it, drop it as far down into the toilet as you can get it, clamp it in place, and then turn the crank handle. Then, try pushing and pulling on it so as to disrupt the blockage.

If you don’t have a plumber’s snake, an alternative approach is to try doing the same thing using a wire clothes hanger. First you will need to straighten the wire, then place the wire hanger into your toilet’s S bend and try to push the wire through the blockage to make a hole in it. If you do manage to pierce the blockage then wiggle the wire to the left and right to try to make the hole bigger. As with the auger, you could try using the wire to fish out anything that you know might be causing the blockage, as this might be safer than flushing it down the toilet.

Another approach is to use a chemical drain cleaner or caustic soda to clear the blockage. But be careful. Before you pour anything down your toilet, make sure that it is a product that is specifically marked as being safe for use with porcelain. Read the manufacturer’s directions carefully and make sure you are wearing those rubber gloves. Never mix chemical drain cleaners, only use one type of drain cleaner at a time.

By this point your toilet should be cleared; if it is not, then you have a blockage of extreme proportions, and you will need to arrange for a plumber to deal with it for you.

Arkla Gas Bbq Grills And Bbq Grill Replacement Parts For Arkla, Embermatic, Preway Barbecues

Filed under: Kitchen Home Improvement — Admin @ 3:18 pm

By Jason Broderick

Arkla is one of the oldest names in the grilling industry, as the company has been credited with designing one of the first outdoor gas grills. This was done because Arkla Embermatic, which is actually the Arkansas Louisiana Gas Company, wanted to sell more natural gas to its customers. As a result, these grills became a regular household item, as many people were sick of dealing with briquettes and lighter fluid. Arkla grills grew in popularity and other companies began selling similar items.

Even though this company is no longer involved in the grilling industry, there are a lot of these grills in daily use. Arkla barbecues and many manufacturers from an older, different era of quality made commodities that were built to last many years. The H burners and Oval burners used in older model barbecue grills are easily replaced and the rest of the grills can easily function for many decades of outdoor barbecuing.

Many Arkla Embermatic grills date back to the 1960s, so it can be difficult to track down replacement grill parts. One of the most common problems with these grills is that the burner stops functioning which is easy to fix. The majority of the GR40 models feature a larger cooking area and use an H-burner. There are a number of different styles of H-burners but there were dozens of manufacturers each with dozens of models who all used the same design of H burner, if not the exact same size with double and single venturi tubes to attach to the grill valves. Most of the 3000 and 4000 level Arkla grills also use this style of burner, while the smaller grills used an oval styled burner. All of these burners are made from stainless steel or a thick cast iron.

Heat shields on an older Arka BBQ grill will eventually corrode and the type of Arkla replacement vaporizer shield will be dependent on the size and model of the grill. The 2000 and 3000 level grill use a 10 5/8″ x 18 1/4″ shield, the 4000, 5000 and GB models use a 10 5/8″ x 20 1/2″ or a 10 5/8″ x 23 3/4″ shield. It is useful to know the Arkla grill model number in order to find the right replacement heat shield but often grill repairs can use the same product from a different model or make of gas grill. Most BBQ grills will be designed with either a grid to support lava rocks or a vaporizer shield. A briquette grid is designed to add heat at the grilling surface by conducting heat while the vaporizer plate is designed to spread convectional heat while deflecting dropping grease while barbecuing. The vast majority of Arkla Embermatic barbecues used lava rocks grids. Grids are easily replaced and are available in hundreds of sizes.

The Arkla BBQ replacement rock grates are dependant on the size of the grill indicated by the model. The majority of the 2000 level grills, along with some of the larger ones, use a 10 3/16″ x 18 3/16″ grate, while most of the 3000 and 4000 level models require an 11 5/8″ x 17 1/4″ grate. There are a few 3000 and 4000 level grills that use a 11 3/4″ x 19″ or 11 3/4″ x 20″ rock grate, although the largest grills that are offered by this company go all the way up to 12 1/2″ x 27 1/4″. Replacement briquette grids can be off-sized as long as the depth from fron to back within the fire box is correct. Because the grid mounts in the barbeque grill firebox front and back this must be measured but the width from left to right can be a few sizes too small and still properly conduct heat for barbecuing. All of these products are made from carbon steel or cast iron that has been porcelain enameled or galvanized and designed hold up against all kinds of use and outdoor weather.

Arkla grills were sold at Sears under the Kenmore name during the 1980s. Through its long history, Kenmore barbeque grills have been manufactured by a large number of grill companies and importers. As a true manufacturer, Arkla made solid products under the Arkla name but also Embermatic and Preway built to last for many decades regardless of extreme heat, rain and freezing snow. The Arkla Embermatic barbecue grills that are still in use are grilling strong in both residential and commercial environments and are certainly worth repairing. Even the best made gas grills need gas grill replacement parts from time to time but the Arkla barbecues are reliably built for decades of use with minimal grill repairs.

Columbus Ohio Kitchen Remodeling Tips

Filed under: Kitchen Home Improvement — @ 1:48 am

byadmin

The thought of having a newly remodeled kitchen is exciting. It’s almost as exciting as when you purchase your first home. Although remodeling is exciting, it also comes with it’s share of growing pains. When preparing to remodel your kitchen, here are some considerations to make before doing so.

First of all, be realistic about what type of kitchen you want. Consider the space you have to work with and don’t go overboard. Stick as closely to your budget as possible. Some of the luxurious extras may not be necessary unless you know for a fact you can afford those things.

Opt for quality materials such as cabinetry, appliances and counter-tops. These are all items that you want to last for many years. This doesn’t mean you have to go with the most expensive items, but don’t buy cheaper quality materials. If you do, you will find yourself having to replace parts of your kitchen fairly soon. You need durable fixtures that speak quality and style.

When choosing the type of flooring you want, choose a durable flooring product that is water resistant. This will help protect your flooring in case you were to have a water leak of some sort in your kitchen. Water leaks are one of the most common causes of damage to kitchen floor and cabinetry.

Speaking with and receiving estimates from professionals who do kitchen remodeling in Columbus Ohio should be on your “to do” list. This should be done before you even begin to choose your fixtures. A professional contractor can measure your space and can also help you choose the appropriate fixtures for your new kitchen.

When you have a professional in kitchen remodeling helping you with your kitchen you will experience a lot less difficulty than doing it yourself. All it takes is one mistake that could prove to be extremely costly to you. This will cut deep into your budget so it’s best to leave kitchen remodeling to the pro’s who do it everyday.

Once the remodel is complete, you will be able to enjoy your new kitchen for many years to come.

A Grandfather Clock For The Home With A Heart

Filed under: Kitchen Home Improvement — @ 2:25 am

By Andrei Myers

There is no place like home, as the saying goes. What is home but a place where the heart is. It has to be safe and stable through the years, like the dependable grandfather clock.

The Heart Goes On, So Does the Grandfather Clock

Since its reinvention from the ho-hum long case clock, the grandfather clock is still going strong. It has continued to be a focal piece in households all over the world. Its timeless elegance and unparalleled quality never diminished through the years. The tall clock has adapted to the changing tastes and continues to be a sought-after item for homes and offices.

There are three design categories of the grandfather clock:

1. Traditional or antique reproductions

2. Contemporary

3. Curio

There are other variations, but nothing beats the original or the traditional design so familiar to many generations all over the globe. It is still the tall and regal grandfather clock that gets the vote, hands down.

From the three popular categories, interior decorators, homemakers, and collectors can make their choices to suit their specific needs. The thoroughly modern Millie would opt for the contemporary version, or an interior decorator would opt for a traditional or curio to go with the decorating theme. So it is understood that a grandfather clock has a place in all homes and offices.

Not Your Average Clock

Young couples building their homes are hesitant to get a grandfather clock, fearing its stiff price. They shouldn’t because these beautiful clocks have different price packages. But people must know that these clocks are not your ordinary clocks.

These are carefully handcrafted by masters who have been in trade for years. The craftsmanship has been passed on to younger artisans after rigid training and apprenticeship. This is reassuring because people are still getting top-notch quality in these times.

Which Clock is Your Style?

Famous brands like Howard Miller and Ridgeway have continued to produce the clocks with the same exactitude and care. Whenever you buy a clock from these trusted manufacturers, you are assured of top quality – whatever design and model. They are made from the best hardwood and polished to a veneer for that glow that’ll endure through the years.

The

Howard Miller Seville Grandfather Clock

is a beautiful floor clock in Black Coffee finish with a white face dial. The famous pendulum in brushed nickel grid and nickel-finished weigh shells add to the attractiveness of the bezel. It has simple lines, which is right for a contemporary home. You can imagine how dramatically it will stand out in a pale room with pale walls and furnishings. Perhaps you’ll add spots of bright colors – bold reds, vibrant oranges, and sunny yellows – in your throw pillows or floral arrangement. The picture is just perfect.

The

Howard Miller Chateau Grandfather Clock

has a graceful split pediment characteristic of traditional designs. The dial is accented by a stationary blue moon phase and polished brass dial. It’s like buying yourself a prized heirloom. For homes and offices that want to maintain a standard tradition, this is the clock to carefully consider.

The

Richwood Grandfather Clock by Ridgeway

provides three glass shelves for your collections. With two glass side panels, a back mirror, and an interior light, your collections will also earn admiring glances. The clock has a split pediment and a finial crown that is gracefully full turned.

All these clocks have delightful chimes and automatic chimes shut-off. All orders are given the white glove delivery treatment without extra cost. Once installed in your home or office, it will keep in time through the years.

Ten Tips To Get You Through Your Kitchen Remodel}

Filed under: Kitchen Home Improvement — @ 1:19 am

Submitted by: Adam Fennelly

Most everyone wants a new kitchen but few people realise the work and inconvenience that goes into a kitchen remodel. A big remodel can take months and you won’t have access to the room while the work is going on. While this can be a trying time, once you have your beautiful new kitchen in place it will be well worth it.

Here are some tips to get you through the remodel and on to your new kitchen:

1. You will need to set up a temporary kitchen in another part of the house. Make sure it is a convenient location that has access to water and a space to keep food cold as well as a place to heat up meals. Sometimes portable appliances like a crock-pot or electric frying pan and a small dorm fridge and microwave work good for a temporary arrangement if you will be replacing your old appliances.

2. Make sure you really think about how long the job will take. Most jobs run take longer than expected. This can be frustrating for everyone, so it’s in your best interest to set a realistic date and that way you won’t be disappointed.

3. Make sure you know what you are going to reuse. Whether you do some of the work yourself or hire it out make sure that it is very clear what things are going to be reused. The cabinets, counter tops and flooring can become damaged during a remodel and if you are planning on reusing them this can be a huge problem and expense. Remember to be careful around these reusable items.

4. Make sure you seal off the room properly so you don’t get dust and debris all over the house. If you have hired someone to do the job, they will probably know just what to do but if you are doing it yourself, invest in some plastic sheeting and make sure you secure it around the doorways as good as possible.

5. Get everything out of the kitchen; box up everything that will not be used in your temporary kitchen. Label the boxes and store them out of the way.

6. Remove anything that isn’t nailed or screwed down. This includes drawers, spice racks, wall clocks, ornaments, etc. Place a protective cover over anything that must remain in place while you work.

7. Make arrangements for the removal of any refuse that may accumulate during the remodeling. If you must rent a dumpster, do so in plenty of time or have a pick up truck on hand for hauling the rubbish to the dump. If you plan to salvage the old cabinetry for a workshop or donation to a charitable cause, have a place ready for them to go as you take them out of your work area.

8. Think safety and remember to turn off all utilities before removing any major appliances, turn off all utilities. This can be done at the individual shut off valves for gas and water. If there are no shut off valves, you will have to turn off the main valve. The main gas valve is usually located near the gas meter. Remember that, once you turn off the gas to the whole house, ALL pilot lights will have to be relit before they will work again. Without careful planning you may find yourself without hot water when you’re ready to clean up after a hard day’s work.

9. In older homes, the wiring may have been modified over the years and it may not be clear which circuits or fuses control specific areas. If you are unsure, turn off the main power or get professional assistance. Never take a chance with electricity! In addition, tape over the breakers so they won’t be turned on inadvertently. If you plan on upgrading your electrical system and adding new outlets and fixtures, it will be necessary to dismantle all existing outlets and fixtures.

10. Remove all light bulbs. Then, dismantle each fixture by using a screwdriver to unscrew the plate and the receptacle and pull the receptacle out of the box. Put wire nuts on any exposed wires for the interim. The bare copper wire is the ground and does not need to be capped.

House Floor Plan Design Taking Control Of The Building Process

Filed under: Kitchen Home Improvement — @ 1:25 am

By Rebecca Welch

One of the most wonderful things about house floor plan design is that the floor plans can be tailored to suit individual or family needs. House plans can be modified based on a standard modular design or custom drafted by an architect.

Obviously, the custom drafted house floor plan design is going to be the more costly option. If you have specific design requests, however, an architectual draft might be better able to serve your needs. Modifying a standard modular design can be accomplished with relative ease, but the modifications available may somewhat limited.

Another option exists for the hands on do-it-yourself type person. A number of house floor plan software programs exist to help design everything from house blueprints and landscapes to interior design layouts. Plumbing and electrical layouts can also be added to these computer drawn designs.

Regardless of which option you choose, when deciding on your house floor plan design the flow of house traffic should be an important consideration. The following questions should be asked when planning the layout of your new home:

1. Which room does the family congregate in most when they are together? Some families gather in the living room or den while others gravitate more toward the kitchen or possibly even the patio in the back yard.

2. Which door do family members use most when entering or leaving the home? While most families use the front door, there are some who prefer the garage door or a side entrance.

3. How close should the secondary bedrooms be in relation to the master suite? Couples with small children may choose to build the bedrooms closer together in order to avoid long trips down the hall in the middle of the night. Couples with teenagers at home may elect to build the children’s bed rooms at the opposite end of the house to the master suite. This approach will cut down on the noise level.

House floor plan design can be used at every stage of the building process to make certain that the completed home has the look, feel, and functionality that will serve well for years to come.
