New Ghanaian currency introduced

Filed under: Uncategorized — Admin @ 3:43 pm

Tuesday, July 3, 2007

New currency notes are being introduced in Ghana today. The new currency, to be called the Ghanaian cedi, replaces the previous cedi which has been in circulation since 17 February, 1967.

The Ghanaian cedi will be exchanged at 10,000 old cedis to one new Ghanaian cedi. The exchange rate against the U.S. dollar starts at GH¢0.92 to one U.S. dollar. The new ISO code for the currency is GHS, and the new symbol, GH¢.

The change, which was originally scheduled by the Bank of Ghana to start on July 1, 2007, will instead start on Tuesday July 3, as the original date is Ghana’s Republic Day.

Monday, July 2, was declared a public holiday as the actual Republic Day fell on a Sunday. July 3, is thus the first day that the currency will be available to the public as banks open to the general public. This is because ATMs were shut down over the weekend so that the currencies could be checked and replaced in all of them nationwide. The old and new currencies will be used concurrently until the end of December 2007, when the old currency will cease to be legal tender.

This is the third Ghanaian cedi to be introduced in the country since 1965.

Online Or Offline, Price Comparison Tools Help Consumers Shop Smart

Filed under: Pet Supplies — Admin @ 3:33 pm

Submitted by: Michael Brito

While comparison shopping is nothing new, the way shoppers conduct their research is. Years ago, shoppers combed through retail shelves in pursuit of the perfect deal, an effort that took time, effort and gas. Today, the web fills the gap between time and space with an array of comparison shopping sites that offer customer reviews, large selections and access to prices from well-known stores.

According to ComScore, of the 167 million Americans online in February, almost 53 million of them visited at least one of the top comparison-shopping sites. And, while many of those consumers bought online, many others used the information to purchase the desired product in a retail shop as well. Competition is indeed fierce in cyberspace and in the store; but, the good news is it is consumers who are getting the great end of the deal.

Among the list of popular sites that allow visitors to contrast and compare are Yahoo Shopping, Shopzilla, Froogle and NexTag. In addition, there are at least another ten price comparison sites that boast the best tools and technology to help consumers make smarter choices. Each has distinct features, advantages and, unfortunately, disadvantages. Still, the popularity of such sites and technology means that entrepreneurs and dot-coms will continue to devise ways for consumers to research and buy goods, ensuring that competition among online and offline retailers will remain stiff.

In fact, the top price comparison sites are already getting some tough opposition from companies that take advantage of the other guys shortcomings. Frucall, which according to the company spokesperson was inspired by frugal shoppers everywhere, for example, is one of the newest services targeted to value-minded shoppers and boasts a quick and convenient way for bargain-hunters to get the best deal, even without the use of a computer.

Launched in March as the first price-comparison mobile service, Frucall allows shoppers to compare retail store prices with prices for the same products on Amazon.com, directly from their cell phone. It s a simple solution that sidelines many sites that offer price comparison results to be sent via text message to a consumer s cell phone but fail to offer immediate access to price comparisons when the shopper sees a product he or she didn t research ahead of time. Even better, is that consumers can actually buy the product directly from their mobile phone, assuming they have registered and have a valid credit card in their profile.

Touted as the easiest and quickest way to price compare, Frucall enables shoppers in the midst of surveying retail aisles to call a toll-free number (888-FRU-SHOP) and input the product s UPC or ISBN number. Within a few seconds, the caller gets a confirmation of the product name and the price of the item as listed online. Currently, the service compares prices for products from a variety of categories including automotive supplies, books, electronics, jewelry, movies, music, tools and pet supplies. In the future, Frucall says they will generate best price information through Internet-wide e-commerce searches.

Seems the online price comparison wars will rage on.

Wikinews mourns loss of volunteer John Shutt

Filed under: Uncategorized — Admin @ 3:44 pm
This article mentions the Wikimedia Foundation, one of its projects, or people related to it. Wikinews is a project of the Wikimedia Foundation.

Saturday, February 27, 2021

On Friday, Wikinews learned Dr John Nathan Shutt, a long-time contributor to both Wikinews and Wikibooks, died on Wednesday. Editing under the name Pi zero, he was at the time the top contributor to Wikinews by edit count, and came third on English Wikibooks. Dr Shutt was 56 years old.

Dr Shutt’s elder sister, Ms Barbara Shutt, informed Wikinews about his death via email on early Friday. His mother Elsie Shutt had called 9-1-1 emergency services after he had trouble breathing. By the time the ambulance came, Dr Shutt was unconscious. Ms Barbara Shutt also added the doctors operated on him for two hours, but at the end, Dr Shutt died either by blood clots or by a series of heart attacks.

Dr Shutt was the most active editor and administrator on this project and had been contributing as Pi zero since September 2008. He was promoted to administrator in July 2010 and became a reviewer in August 2010. Since then, he has peer-reviewed then published over a thousand news articles on-wiki, the most recent being just a day before his death. He made over 160 thousand edits and over 120 thousand log entries on English Wikinews.

He also held reviewer and administrator privileges on English Wikibooks, having contributed to several wikibooks including Conlang, World Religions, Solar System and The Elements; and created Stacks, a mechanism for sorting the project’s content.

Dr Shutt would occasionally write blogs on his blogger called “Structural insight”. Dr Shutt was interested in constructed languages (conlangs). He was an avid reader, and enjoyed J. R. R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings novels.

In a discussion about Tolkien’s works last year, Dr Shutt said, “I read The Hobbit when I was, I think, a teenager. I read it again a few months ago; not sure if I ever read it between those times. It’s a wonderfully written story — by a linguist and, in fact, a conlanger. I’ve got the Lord of the Rings (the books, I mean), which I’ve read at least a couple of times over the years. And the Silmarillion, which covers the earliest part of Tolkien’s legendarium. Christopher Tolkien, his son who was close to his fantasy writing, is his literary executor and has spent the past half century of his life editing and publishing various of his father’s papers. I actually got for christmas… a year ago, I think, The Fall of Gondolin, which Christopher says will be the last of his father’s books that he publishes.”

Dr Shutt was awarded a PhD in Computer Science in 2011 from the Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI), Massachusetts. His research interests included Abstraction theory; the Kernel programming language, a Lisp-based language which he created and was his dissertation topic; Recursive Adaptive Grammars, the core of his master’s thesis as well as Self-Modifying Finite Automata which he developed with Roy Rubinstein. He had received his master’s degree in 1993, five years after finishing his bachelor’s degree, both from WPI. Dr John Shutt was also interested in adaptive grammar as well as category theory. He often programmed in Lisp, enjoyed xkcd comics and used Emacs as his choice of text editor.

He had spent one year at the Brown University for his post-graduate academics. Recalling the experience, Dr. Shutt said, “I spent one year at Brown, but it didn’t work. And was a traumatic experience for me; it took me a couple of years to recover enough to make a second try at graduate school.” Dr Shutt shared an office with Paul Howard in the 1988/89 academic year at Brown University. In July 2019, Dr Shutt said, “It saddens me that I forgot to wish Paul Howard a happy birthday this year, and he appears to have forgotten to wish me one either. First time we’ve failed to exchange birthday wishes, even if belatedly, since we were assigned to share an office in the 1988/89 academic year at Brown”.

Andres Navarro and Oto Havle had created an implementation of Kernel programming language, called kernel, which was mentioned in a presentation at BSDCan by Michael MacInnis. Recalling that incident in November, Dr Shutt said, “Two or three years ago, this guy Michael MacInnis emailed me. He was getting ready to give a talk at BSDCan (an annual BSD conference in Canada) about a new UNIX shell he was ready to release, called Oh; and he wanted to know if it was okay if he mentioned my name in regard to fexprs, ’cause my dissertation had come out as he was putting the design together and Kernel-style fexprs fit wonderfully well with his concept so he used them. I assured him I was fine with having my name mentioned. Last night I was watching the video he provides of his talk, which iirc he felt went very well. I’ve been meaning to learn in more detail how the shell works; it was kind of fascinating to me how it very easily does away with most of Lisp’s parentheses despite being fundamentally Lisp. (Cons cells and fexprs. Profoundly Lisp.)”.

Dr Shutt lived with Asperger’s syndrome. In a discussion with one of the Wikimedia volunteers, he said, “As often happens with aspies, I was a hyperlexic kid, some of which has lingered.”

Dr Shutt lived in Massachusetts, US, and is survived by his mother Elsie Shutt, his sister and niece Barbara and Hannah Shutt, his cat Pickles and his brother David Shutt. Dr Shutt would have turned 57 next Friday.

Wikinews interviews World Wide Web co-inventor Robert Cailliau

Filed under: Uncategorized — Admin @ 3:40 pm

Thursday, August 16, 2007

The name Robert Cailliau may not ring a bell to the general public, but his invention is the reason why you are reading this: Dr. Cailliau together with his colleague Sir Tim Berners-Lee invented the World Wide Web, making the internet accessible so it could grow from an academic tool to a mass communication medium. Last January Dr. Cailliau retired from CERN, the European particle physics lab where the WWW emerged.

Wikinews offered the engineer a virtual beer from his native country Belgium, and conducted an e-mail interview with him (which started about three weeks ago) about the history and the future of the web and his life and work.

Wikinews: At the start of this interview, we would like to offer you a fresh pint on a terrace, but since this is an e-mail interview, we will limit ourselves to a virtual beer, which you can enjoy here.

Robert Cailliau: Yes, I myself once (at the 2nd international WWW Conference, Chicago) said that there is no such thing as a virtual beer: people will still want to sit together. Anyway, here we go.

A Brief Introduction To Technical Trading

Filed under: Money Transfer — Admin @ 3:22 pm

Submitted by: Sean Goudeloc

Many people aspire to get some cash out from the stock market. Even though it is difficult, many have found Forex to be an excellent gateway to become rich and to achieve their long-term goals. And to make sure that they will get something from it, most of them have studied the concepts of technical trading.

This trading is dependent on technical analysis. As you might not know, technical analysis is an effective trading system or tool that helps traders interpret market information for possibilities and opportunities in the trading market. Using this tool, traders can make decisions on whether they will move or not during their trades.

On the other hand, even though it is called technical analysis, its primary goal is to unravel patterns brought on by investor behavior and human psychology. This system uses volume data, price, stock quotes, and stock charts. The results of an analysis of these factors will show traders trends in the financial market.

Technical analysis gives its users an idea if the current trend is bullish or bearish. Bullish, in Forex language, means that investments are having value appreciation, while bearish means that prices are going to have a long-term decline.

Once traders foresee that an investment will have a bullish advance, they would certainly buy stocks from it. However, a trader must be attentive on the support and resistance levels of the stock trends before he buys some stocks.

Technical analysis is not all about identifying positive trends alone. It can also provide insightful information if a sudden reversal occurs. In case you do not know what a reversal means, technically, it is an event wherein bullish trends will suddenly shift to bearish trends. And if you have already read about charting patterns, one perfect example of a pattern that predicts a reversal is the head and shoulders chart pattern.

Since the Forex market is very difficult to predict even with the use of technical analysis, modern traders mix program trading with technical trading. Program trading is a technique wherein large financial institutions make use of computers in trading blocks in stocks.

Traders will let those institutions handle their stocks automatically. And to make sure that they will prevent any massive loss due to the automation, they can set limits on how much the system can buy, and how much the system can lose before it stops trading.

As a word of advice, make sure that you exhaust all the data you can use during your trades. If you limit your analysis by using volume data and share price alone, the results of your analysis might not be as accurate. Do not forget to use or obtain the annual reports and financial statements of corporate investors, for you to get a more accurate evaluation about the merits of a certain stock investment.

The things mentioned here are only snippets of what you need to know about technical trading. Remember that you must never stop learning, reading, and being updated about the stock market and the Forex scene. Put in mind that the greatest weapon you can use in the trading scene to win is data.

Commonwealth Bank of Australia CEO apologies for financial planning scandal

Filed under: Uncategorized — Admin @ 3:25 pm

Thursday, July 3, 2014

Ian Narev, the CEO of the Commonwealth Bank of Australia, this morning “unreservedly” apologised to clients who lost money in a scandal involving the bank’s financial planning services arm.

Last week, a Senate enquiry found financial advisers from the Commonwealth Bank had made high-risk investments of clients’ money without the clients’ permission, resulting in hundreds of millions of dollars lost. The Senate enquiry called for a Royal Commission into the bank, and the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC).

Mr Narev stated the bank’s performance in providing financial advice was “unacceptable”, and the bank was launching a scheme to compensate clients who lost money due to the planners’ actions.

In a statement Mr Narev said, “Poor advice provided by some of our advisers between 2003 and 2012 caused financial loss and distress and I am truly sorry for that. […] There have been changes in management, structure and culture. We have also invested in new systems, implemented new processes, enhanced adviser supervision and improved training.”

An investigation by Fairfax Media instigated the Senate inquiry into the Commonwealth Bank’s financial planning division and ASIC.

Whistleblower Jeff Morris, who reported the misconduct of the bank to ASIC six years ago, said in an article for The Sydney Morning Herald that neither the bank nor ASIC should be in control of the compensation program.

How To Create An Online Retoucher Portfolio

Filed under: Software And Web Development — Admin @ 3:00 pm

By Anthony Pugh

No matter if you are new to the industry or are a seasoned professional, the article that follows can help you craft an image that is inherently impressive and highly marketable. In order to attract interest in the services you provide, you must have an attention-grabbing portfolio that makes clients want to hire you and only you. The foundation of your portfolio should be comprised of somewhere between five and ten examples of your very best work. The key is to focus on the quality of the pieces, not the volume of work. If you are just launching your career as a retoucher and have not yet amassed a sizeable body of work from which to choose, fear not. It is possible to utilize online Photoshop tutorials in order to create your samples. Simply use your own images in order to avoid stealing someone else’s work.A few of the best sites include:

1 – photoshoptutorials

2 – noupe

3 – psdtuts

After you have assembled no less than five, but hopefully ten examples of your work, you must make sure they are online and ready for prospective clients to view. I strongly suggest that you display before-and-after images as part of your online portfolio, as this technique is the best way to showcase your skills as a retoucher. Make certain to obtain permission from all photographers and clients, as necessary.

Method 1

Engage the services of professional web designers and developers who are able to establish a website using a domain name of your choosing. This is a bit costlier than other options, since you will be responsible for paying hosting fees, the cost of registering your domain name and the rates charged by the designer and developer for crafting your website. However, this also represents the most professional route, because you retain complete control over the site’s appearance. You will be able to stand apart from competitors by having a site that is truly your own.

Method 2

It is also possible to make use of online website creation and blogging platforms, which afford you the opportunity to integrate a domain name of your choosing without the need for a web developer or designer.

WordPress is a particularly good choice, because it is designed to optimise search engine placement, is fairly simple to use, offers integrated blogging capabilities, is customizable and costs nothing. There are essentially two ways you can use WordPress, with the first requiring you to download and complete WordPress installation on a hosted domain of your own (if you have one). Because the site will be accessed via your domain name alone (http://www.yourname.com), you must still pay fees for hosting and domain registration. Alternatively, you can open a http://WordPress.com account and take advantage of their free servers to create your site (http://www.yourname.wordpress.com). Be sure to review all site building instructions and build your online presence by using one of several preexisting theme templates.

Method 3

If you lack the time, the motivation or the funds to create a site of your own, multiple online portfolio sites exist onto which you can place your images, descriptions and additional information at no charge. Such sites frequently boast active online forums as well as abundant resources that can be of great value. Furthermore, these sites tend to be search engine optimised, and can give you a personalised online address to which you can direct prospective clients. The only negative about such sites is the fact that they tend to project a slightly less professional image than the prior two options, which may have a slight impact on your ability to attract business.

A few sites worth exploring include:

1 – behance (seasoned professional)

2 – deviantart (semi-pro)

3 – flickr (novice)

As is the case with virtually any endeavor, the degree of benefits you will reap from establishing an online presence is directly related to the amount of effort you devote to carefully crafting it.
