US Immigrants protest Green Card delays with flowers

Filed under: Uncategorized — Admin @ 3:16 pm

Tuesday, July 10, 2007

Hundreds of legal, highly-skilled workers in the United States sent hundreds of flowers to the Director of the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), Emilio Gonzalez as part of a symbolic and peaceful protest over what they said was a “flip-flop” by the State Department and the USCIS on eliminating Green card processing delays.

Dr. Gonzalez announced on the USCIS website late last night that the flowers will be forwarded to the injured service members recuperating at Walter Reed Army Medical Center and at Bethesda Naval Hospital.

In response, Immigration Voice, a non-profit organization representing skilled, legal immigrants, said that they welcome the fact that Dr. Gonzalez acknowledged the symbolic gesture of our protest and are overjoyed that these flowers will brighten the day of the injured service brethren.

Immigration Voice also said that it is their sacrifice for American freedom that has made this country great and such a desirable destination for multitude of people from around the world and that they wanted to say “Thank you and god bless you” to the servicemen.

Knowing The Differences Between Level And Decreasing Term Life Insurance

Filed under: Financial Planners — Admin @ 3:36 pm

By Joe R. Maldonado

There’s level and decreasing term life insurance, and when it comes time for you to choose between the two you want to know for sure which one is right for you. Since there are such a wide variety of options at your disposal, it can get a little stressful at times when you are trying to determine what policy is the right one for you. Even in the event that you have a broker there to explain all of your options to you, it can still get overwhelming when you are trying to familiarize yourself with all of the differences between the policies.

The average person will go through life not even wondering about life insurance, and then suddenly they go to purchase a home and the issue is brought up. This is when people have to start looking at their financial status and how it is going to relate to the policy that they choose. Most people end up choosing between level and decreasing term life insurance.

If you were to get a level term policy, there would be a set amount determined ahead of time that would be paid out to your beneficiaries in the event of your death. This amount always remains level, or the same regardless of when the person passes away. It doesn’t matter if you have only had the policy for a year; you will still get the same amount as long as everything is up to date as far as payment is concerned.

The other option that you may want to choose would be decreasing term life insurance. When you have this type of insurance, the older you get the less you are going to get paid out. The longer the term goes on, the more the payout just keeps on decreasing. There are actually a lot of people that pay off their mortgage using this type of insurance policy. Just like with level term insurance, there is a set amount that is determined in the beginning that applies for a certain term. This is what the insured person would get if they died during that particular term.

However, the big difference is that with decreasing term life insurance, every year the payout decreases. There are great deals of policies like this that can actually get linked into your mortgage. The reason why someone would want this option is so that if they were to die, their family would not be held responsible for making the mortgage payments. It may seem like no one would choose the life insurance that decreases over time. However, a lot of people choose this option because it is significantly less expensive than level term life insurance.

Before you make any final decisions, it is always necessary that you read the fine print of your policy. You want to know exactly what your policy is going to cover, as well as what it is going to exclude.

Knowing the fundamental differences between level and decreasing term life insurance is going to help you make the best decision as to which policy will best suit the needs of your family.

Three injured in a school shooting in Idaho, US; sixth grader in custody

Filed under: Uncategorized — Admin @ 3:16 pm

Sunday, May 9, 2021

Two students and a school employee have been injured following a shooting at Rigby Middle School in Idaho, United States, on Thursday, with a sixth grader in custody.

According to Jefferson County sheriff Steve Anderson, the sixth grader — who attends the middle school and lives in Idaho Falls — pulled out a handgun from her backpack, firing the gun both in and outside the school, with a teacher managing to disarm the student. Police were called to the school at about 9:15AM local time, and the suspect was taken in the custody of the local sheriff’s office.

The trauma medical director at Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center, Dr. Michael Lemon, has stated the three injured people had non-life threatening injuries to the extremities. The school employee has been treated and released from medical care. A warrant has been issued against an Idaho Falls residence in relation to the shooting.

School was cancelled in the district for Friday. The local school superintendent, Chad Martin, told “this is the worst nightmare a school district could ever face”, and “our hearts and our prayers go out to the victims and their families and all those involved”. A student at the school — 12-year-old Yandel Rodriguez — told the Associated Press “me and my classmate were just in class with our teacher — we were doing work — and then all of a sudden, here was a loud noise and then there were two more loud noises. Then there was screaming”.

Aviation Jobs Are More Varied Than Ever Before, Offering Aspiring Pilots Many Exciting Options For A

Filed under: Consultant — Admin @ 3:04 pm

So you want to be a pilot. You’ve enrolled in flight school and your pilot training is underway. But where do you plan to take your aviation career? The possibilities are endless.

Being a pilot, to many, means flying a commercial airliner. Commercial airline pilots work for large domestic and international carriers like American Airlines, British Airways and Southwest Airlines. Regional airline pilots work for airlines based in a single region like Island Air in Hawaii or Horizon Air in the Pacific Northwest. Some pilots gain experience and flight hours working for smaller regional airlines before working for a large airliner.

A private pilot is a general term that stands in contrast to a commercial pilot flying for a commercial operation. A private pilot may fly only for their own pleasure and travel needs, transporting family and friends to various destinations. A private pilot’s license does not permit the pilot to fly for pay. There are fewer flight hours required for a private pilot’s license than for a commercial pilot’s license.

Corporate pilots, also called business pilots, fly smaller, privately owned planes for individuals and corporations. They transport executives to business meeting and site visits across country. Sometimes the corporation owns these corporate planes and the pilot is an employee of the company. Alternatively, a private jet charter may contract with the company and the pilot may work directly for the charter company.

Law enforcement, rescue and life saving are a unique category of aviation careers where adrenaline and a sense of danger can rule the work day. Typically, these jobs employ helicopter pilots due to their maneuverability.

Search and rescue pilots must complete mountain training and perform at high altitude in mountainous regions and in inclement weather –think hiker lost during their peak attempt and backcountry skier.

Air ambulance pilot is another aviation career where lives are on the line. These pilots transport critical patients and accident victims to emergency rooms much more quickly than traditional ambulances. They also transport emergency medical personnel who tend to the patient while the pilot tends to the aircraft.

There are two classifications of police aviation officers –fixed wing airplane pilots and helicopter pilots. In urban areas, helicopter police assist with traffic control, fugitive pursuits and riot control. These units also provide additional security at major events and assist in the deployment of special units like SWAT and counterterrorism.

On the other end of the spectrum, scenic tour pilots take vacationers on aerial tours of scenic spots. From the Grand Canyon and Hawaiian volcanoes to the Las Vegas strip and Manhattan, scenic tour pilots take their passengers to places that are not easily accessed on foot or by car or that simply offer supreme views from the sky.

Other aviation careers include aerial photography, aerial advertising (banner towing), geological survey, fish and game census, agricultural spraying. In other words, no matter you are looking for, chances are, you can find it in an aviation career.

Ash and steam reported over Mount St. Helens

Filed under: Uncategorized — Admin @ 3:08 pm

Tuesday, March 8, 2005

Portland, Oregon – A cloud of white steam and ash rose as high as 36,000 feet from Mount St. Helens in the U.S. state of Washington at 5:27 p.m. PST today. The eruption was visible from the Portland metropolitan area in the neighbouring state of Oregon, causing traffic slowdowns as commuters slowed to watch the spectacle. News helicopters have shown photos of lava emerging inside the crater. Although the eruption was mostly over by 6:07 p.m. PST, an ashfall advisory until 9:00 p.m. PST has been announced for communities around the mountain.

The volcano has been building a new dome in its crater in recent months and causing tremors. It seems to have done enough damage to knock out at least two of the seismometers operated on its dome by the Pacific Northwest Seismograph Network, although this could be the result of either damage to the seismometers themselves, or their telemetry equipment.

The volcano is most famous for its dramatic eruption in 1980 which killed 57 people and blew the top off the mountain.

Its a great example of the verrine making process: Take three things that go well together and artfully arrange them in a small, clear glass. Simply mix goat cheese and honey together with a hand mixer into a fluffed compound (the ratio of goat cheese to honey should be about four to one). Add a large dollop of the cheese mixture to the bottom of a large clear shot glass or similar lowball style glass. Top that with a layer of blueberries, followed by another layer of the cheese-honey mixture and another layer of a different chopped fruit, like raspberries or pears. For the mousse, use your own favorite recipe or, if you want something extra simple, try this: Whip a pint of heavy whipping cream until it peaks. Add about a pint of fudge ice cream topping and three teaspoons of cocoa. Mix the ingredients together and freeze until the mixture is dense enough that your strawberry topping rests comfortable on top of it in the verrine! This verrine combination not only makes for fabulous flavor – it also packs a big time visual punch with a striking cream, brown and bright red color combo! More Secrets of Verrines Experiment with the flavors you like best: Verrines are popular with chefs in large part because they present unlimited options, so pair what you like. Remember, verrines can simply be three layers of complimentary ingredients – or can be much more complicated and include various artfully arranged dishes and seasonings. Take advantage of the versatility of verrines: While most commonly served as appetizers and desserts, verrines can also be served as main courses, especially at parties that dont include a sit down meal. Consider transferring whatever youd normally serve on a plate into a glass! For example, if you planned a meal featuring meat, potatoes and cheese, you can arrange a portion of each in single serve glasses to serve to each guest. Finish with a flourish A verrine is a visual dish; so dont be afraid to show off your artistic side with the presentation. Garnishes can be splashed on top of each glass, or stuck into the layers to stick out the top. Consider sprinkling fresh mint leaves to add a little green to your dessert verrines, or adding some cinnamon sticks or veggie shavings so they flow out of the top of the glasses. With verrines, the possibilities are truly endless. For more information on how to enhance your party with great gourmet cheese ideas visit http://www.iledefrancecheese.com

At least 50 killed in clashes in Guinea

Filed under: Uncategorized — Admin @ 3:14 pm

Tuesday, September 29, 2009

Witnesses and medical officials say at least 50 people have been killed in Conakry, the capital of Guinea, in clashes between security forces and opposition activists who defied a government ban on protests.

Witnesses say Guinea’s security forces opened fire on demonstrators who had gathered in a large stadium to protest against the possible presidential candidacy of Captain Moussa Dadis Camara, the country’s military leader. They also say police charged protesters with batons, used tear gas, and detained several opposition leaders.

We have counted 52 bodies and six more have just come in.

“We have counted 52 bodies and six more have just come in,” the city’s university medical centre’s doctor said.

On Sunday, Captain Camara’s government said all protests would be prohibited until national independence celebrations are held on October 2.

“All demonstrations on national territory are prohibited until the national holiday on October 2,” said Frederic Kolie, the interior minister, in a televised address on Sunday.

However, opposition activists decided to proceed with the demonstration they had planned for Monday. Some carried signs that read “No to Dadis”, and others chanted “We want true democracy.” Some of the demonstrators set furniture on fire as they marched from the outskirts of the capital into the city.

“[…] Conakry can be rightly described as a police state […] All across town, military people at checkpoints are searching people and people have been forced back into their houses,” said Al Hassan Silah, a local journalist, to the Al Jazeera news agency.

Captain Camara took power in a coup last December, following the death of Guinea’s longtime President Lansana Conte.

When he took power, Captain Camara said no one in his ruling council would run for public office. However, the council has since said its members are eligible to be candidates, and Captain Camara has suggested he may run for president in elections, which are scheduled for January 2010.

The African Union said it may impose sanctions on Guinea if Captain Camara decides to run for president. It said it was concerned about what it called a “deteriorating situation” in the country and the consequences of not returning to constitutional order.

Opponents have also accused Mr Camara and his ruling council of human rights abuses and limiting freedom of speech.

Supporters of Guinea’s military council are calling the threatened sanctions unfair.

Fifteen flu sufferers die in Wales in one week

Filed under: Uncategorized — Admin @ 3:35 pm

Friday, January 14, 2011

Over the course of the last week, fifteen people who have suffered from influenza have died in Wales, as reported to the Welsh Assembly Government. The total amount of flu-related deaths in Wales since October 2010 has now increased to 27.

Despite the slight increase in the clinical consultation rate for influenza this week compared to the previous week, the rate of consultations for flu-like illness in Wales still remains within the levels of normal seasonal flu activity.

On Tuesday, 49 people were being treated in critical care beds in hospitals around Wales, according to health officials. With twelve reported admissions, Aneurin Bevan Local Health Board had the highest amount of critical care patients in Wales. Betsi Cadwaladr University Local Health Board has the second highest total number of patients experiencing this critical care in the country, with eleven being cared for. Cardiff and Vale University Health Board and Abertawe Bro Morgannwg University Health Board have nine important care admissions each. Cwm Taf NHS Trust contains five of such patients, while Hywel Dda NHS Trust has three.

The age group of 25–34 years old had the largest amount of meetings with general practitioners; the rate of consultation was 147 people for every 100,000. For all age groups, 93 people out of every one hundred thousand have been consulting with a GP; on January 5, the total figure stood at 85 meetings per 100,000.

“Despite the slight increase in the clinical consultation rate for influenza this week compared to the previous week, the rate of consultations for flu-like illness in Wales still remains within the levels of normal seasonal flu activity,” said Dr. Tony Jowell, the Chief Medical Officer of Wales. “Most healthy people will recover from flu-like illnesses within five to seven days with plenty of rest and drinking non-alcoholic fluids. On the issue of vaccination against seasonal flu, whilst we have been working to make stocks of the vaccine that was developed against swine flu available to be used where supplies of seasonal flu vaccine have run low, we are now well into the flu season.”

According to Media Wales, 13 patients experiencing flu-related symptoms were getting treatment at Withybush General Hospital in Haverfordwest on Tuesday. Meanwhile, five were receiving hospital treatment at Bronglais General Hospital in Aberystwyth. Also, Carmarthenshire NHS Trust in Llanelli and West Wales General Hospital in Carmarthen both had a solitary patient.

Jowell also commented: “People in at-risk groups are at a higher risk of complications from seasonal flu, and the best protection is early vaccination. A press and publicity campaign has been running since October and has included television, radio and bus adverts to let people know if they are in an at-risk group, and that the vaccine is available free of charge to those groups from GPs. We have also encouraged health boards and GPs to ensure that their patients and front line NHS staff are vaccinated against seasonal flu.”

Throughout the United Kingdom, 62 individuals reportedly died in the last week, as the result of suffering from influenza. The majority of these victims were suffering from swine flu. In most of these cases, the sufferers were aged between 15 and 64. However, nine of the fatalities were of children aged below fourteen.

Mandela discharged from hospital

Nelson Mandela has left hospital to return to his home in Johannesburg, in a critical condition, South African officials said on Sunday.

The 95-year-old anti-apartheid leader and former South African president has spent nearly three months in hospital for treatment of a recurring lung infection and has returned to his residence in Johannesburg where he will continue to recover.

A statement from the office of current South African president Jacob Zuma confirmed Mandela homecoming:

“His teams of doctors are convinced that he will receive the same level of intensive care at his Houghton home that he received in Pretoria.”

“His home has been reconfigured to allow him to receive intensive care there. The health care personal providing care at his home are the very same who provided care to him in hospital.”

Several ambulances and TV crews gathered outside Mandela’s home in the Houghton suburb of Johannesburg on Sunday, where well-wishers gathered to pray for his recovery.

Mandela’s last public appearance was at the 2010 football World Cup, held in South Africa.
