UK Chancellor of the Exchequer makes 2005 Budget speech

Filed under: Uncategorized — Admin @ 3:41 pm

Wednesday, March 16, 2005

The United Kingdom Chancellor of the Exchequer, the Right Honourable Gordon Brown PC MP, in a speech to the British House of Commons today presented his ninth Budget, what is very likely to be his last Budget before the next UK General Election. This opened the parliamentary debate on the 2005 Finance Bill, and was followed by responses from the opposition parties.

In a 48 minute long speech, the Chancellor presented a Budget of “tax cuts that are reasonable, spending that is affordable, and [economic] stability that is paramount”, that was “the prudent course for Britain”. There were few surprises that had not already been indicated in his 2004 pre-Budget report. The increase in the threshold on stamp duty was greater than that forecast by commentators, as was the amount of the Council Tax rebate to households with pensioners.

Sample Resumes

Filed under: Scaffolding — Admin @ 3:47 pm

By Alesia Benedict, CPRW, JCTC

Do you ever wonder why resume services post free resume samples on their sites for resume service clients to view? What do sample resumes provide? There is an ongoing argument among professional resume writers that posting sample resumes on websites is akin to giving away their work. True, some visitors to sites rip off the sample resumes they find there to use in their own job searches. Unfortunately for them, these individuals do not understand they are doing themselves a disservice.

If a site visitor likes a sample resume, its usually not the content that attracts them but rather the style of the writing, the approach to the content, and the strategy that lies behind the writing. Sample resumes are generally chosen by the professional resume writer as stellar examples of approach and strategy, not for the professions or background of the resume owner.

I had a client who sent an old resume to me as part of the process of developing his new resume. The first page was typically self-written but the second page diverged considerably not only was the entire career background different (he went from a network specialist to a Lawson programmer), but the entire approach was different. When I asked him about it, he stated oh, that was a sample resume that I found on a site. I cant remember which one. I noted that it was a completely different field than his and his reply was that he just liked the approach and style of the sample resume portion.

Without his realizing, he had snatched a portion of a sample resume that I had written several years earlier and was posted as a sample resume on Rezamaze.com. To avoid embarrassing him, I did not point it out but I thought it was a good illustration of the purpose of sample resumes. The purpose of a sample resume is to demonstrate how the professional resume writer can take a job seekers background and craft a document that grabs the attention, promotes the clients qualifications, and projects a professional image that will get the interview.

Sample resumes are not only posted on websites, but there is a plethora of resume books on the market that show sample resumes from different professions and written by different professional writers. A great deal of our work here at GetInterviews.com is published as sample resumes in these books.

If you find a sample resume on our site that appeals to you, give us a call. Wed be happy to discuss how we can construct a professional resume for you that would promote your career so you can get the interview!

Canada, U.S. to tighten security between ‘cross-border’ library

Filed under: Uncategorized — Admin @ 3:10 pm

Sunday, May 27, 2007

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), the United States Border Patrol and local officials from both sides are looking into tightening security at a Quebec library. The library has been deliberately on the border of Canada and the U.S. since it was built in 1904 by American sawmill owner Carlos Haskell and Canadian wife Martha Stewart Haskell for availability to both countries.

At Haskell Free Library and Opera House, in Rock Island, Quebec, a black line diagonally runs across the center of the library to mark the international border. Ironically the line puts the seats in the U.S. and the opera stage in Canada.

Both towns share the same water supply, sewer systems and emergency crews thus they cross the border without going against the law. In total, there are three streets that cross the border and there are cameras on both sides to monitor illegal activity, but that doesn’t tighten border security enough officials say.

“There’s been an increase in illegal activity, both north and south, in the last little while,” said operations officer for the Border Patrol’s Swanton sector, Mark Henry.”There have been some significant cases. This all fits in to the larger picture of the Border Patrol strategy to gain operational control of our borders.”

“I don’t think they’re aiming at people who go pick up groceries and come back. It’s people that want to use this in a bad way,” says Cpl. Luc Bessette, a spokesman for the RCMP.

To enter the U.S. at Haskell Free Library and Opera House, in Rock Island, Quebec, all one needs is directions to go to Stanstead, Quebec, directions to the local library and walk through the doors; they have illegally entered Derby Line, Vermont, U.S. If one walks across from Stanstead St. to Derby Line they will be at the checkout in the U.S., go to the library from Derby Line to Stanstead St. and they have officially entered back into Canada. The international border also is on Canusa St., a residential street in Stanstead, Quebec and Beebe Plain, Vermont.

If someone wants to see their neighbour across the street, they would be re-entering the U.S. Anyone who comes from Stanstead St. to Derby Line, to visit their neighbour, must report to Customs or they could be sent to jail for illegally entering. However, residents do not need to notify Customs if they cross the border inside buildings.

Currently, the front door is in Vermont and if Quebecers couldn’t enter the front they would have to go through the back way. If Americans wanted to park in the parking lot they couldn’t because it is legally in Canada.

A meeting will take place this 19 June at 7 p.m. local time asking whether residents want to prevent people from crossing the border regularly or, in some cases, illegal crossings. During a meeting last Thursday in Stanstead, Quebec, local officials from both countries (towns) said border walls and fences will not be put up due to local residents’ concerns. They say there are other alternatives.

There is also a movement to separate Vermont from the U.S. or to make it the 11th province of Canada, with three territories. The website “Vermont Canada” says the state should join Canada due to its remaining liberal policies as opposed to the U.S.

On Thursday, Charles Lazarus, the founder of United States toy retailer Toys “R” Us, died in Manhattan, New York, New York of respiratory failure. He was 94. His death came a week after Toys “R” Us announced that all of the stores were closing.

Toys “R” Us issued a statement in which they said, “There have been many sad moments for Toys “R” Us in recent weeks, and none more heartbreaking than today’s news about the passing of our beloved founder, Charles Lazarus. He visited us in New Jersey just last year and we will forever be grateful for his positive energy, passion for the customer and love for children everywhere. Our thoughts and prayers are with Charles’ family and loved ones.”

Michael Goldstein, who was a close friend and former Toys “R” Us chairman, said: “He was the father of the toy business. He knew the toys and loved the toys and loved the kids who would shop in the stores. His face lit up when he watched kids playing with toys.” In a phone interview Goldstein said that Charles Lazarus died in Manhattan.

Lazarus no longer held a stake in the chain, CNN reported. Lazarus took over his father’s bicycle repair shop in 1948 at the age of 25 and changed it to baby furniture. He opened the first Toys “R” Us store in 1957. Lazarus had remained its CEO until 1994.

The Relationship Between Music And Dance In Ancient China

The Relationship between Music and Dance in Ancient China

by

Kaylaliu

It is universally accepted that the music and dance have the closest relationships in the family of art. They born together and cooperate with each other in the long development process, creating a series of extraordinary music culture and dance culture.

The relationship between music and dance can trace back to the primitive society. Even though the human beings at that time have language as the most important communication tool, students who come to learn Chinese in China should know that they would sing to express their feelings when they failed to express with language. However, when they failed to express the strong feelings with songs, they would dance to realize it. Unfortunately, the music and dance in the ancient times have disappeared. We can just find some trace in the unearthed cultural relics and ancient books. Some foreign learners who come to study Chinese in China may have heard about the pottery basin with dancing patterns unearthed in Sunjiazhai Village of Qinghai in the year of 1973. It is famous for the recording of the dancing in ancient times. In 1944, another one was also unearthed in Qinghai. The patterns on them are all the people who are dancing hand in hand. It is very familiar with the singing and dancing scene of the ethnic people lives in the bordering areas. They all become the important materials to study the music and dance in ancient times. Another important relic about the music and dance in ancient times is found in Cangyuan in Yunnan in 1965. There is a fighting scene that is made up of 21 people. Some of them are holding the shields and some holding the weapons. When you come to study Mandarin in China, teachers may tell you that it reflects that the weapons were used in ancient dancing to show the fighting spirit. The ancient books are also an important resource for us to know the music and dance in ancient times like “lv shi chun qiu”. It is recorded that there was large scale of dancing with music in ancient China. From the historical relics, those who learn Chinese in China can see that music and dance appeared jointly at the very beginning. Therefore, even though they formed different artistic forms in development process, they still closely related, forming rich music and dance forms. In brief, the relationship between music and dance is very close. Even they have formed different artistic forms, they still closely related. That is to say, it is hard for us to separate them.

Wikinews interviews Jim Hedges, U.S. Prohibition Party presidential candidate

Filed under: Uncategorized — Admin @ 3:13 pm

Saturday, January 29, 2011

U.S. Prohibition Party presidential candidate Jim Hedges of Thompson Township, Pennsylvania took some time to answer a few questions about the Prohibition Party and his 2012 presidential campaign.

The Prohibition Party is the third oldest existing political party in the United States, having been established in 1869. It reached its height of popularity during the late 19th century. The party heavily supported the Eighteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution, which banned the sale of alcohol, and resulted in the US period known as Prohibition (1919–33). It was repealed in 1933. The party has declined since this period, but has continued to nominate candidates for the presidential election.

In 2003, the party split into two factions. Preacher Gene Amondson and perennial candidate Earl Dodge were nominated for the presidency by their respective factions. After Dodge’s death in 2007, the party reunified and named Amondson as its sole presidential nominee for 2008. During the election, Amondson was interviewed by Wikinews. He died in 2009, leaving an opening in the party for 2012.

Jim Hedges is a longtime Prohibition activist, who holds the distinction of the first individual of the 21st century (and the first since 1959) to be elected to a political office under the Prohibition Party banner. In 2001, he was elected as the Thompson Township tax assessor, and was re-elected to the post in 2005. He served until his term expired in 2010. Hedges declared his intent to run for the Prohibition Party presidential nomination on February 18, 2010. This marks his first run for the presidency.

Ricky Hatton regains IBF light welterweight title

Filed under: Uncategorized — Admin @ 3:50 pm

Sunday, January 21, 2007

Ricky “The Hitman” Hatton regained the IBF light welterweight title belt he relinquished less than 12 months ago when he defeated Juan Urango in Las Vegas, Nevada tonight.

“The Hitman” won by unanimous decision, as the fight went to 12 rounds. Despite early match odds suggesting Hatton would dominate the fight, this was not the case. Each round was close, but most pundits and judges alike agreed that Urango only won 1 of the 12 rounds, with Hatton taking the other 11.

Despite the unfamiliar confines of Las Vegas, Hatton looked touched by the ringing of football fan-like chants, familiar in British boxing, that rang around the arena, as more than half of it was filled by traveling support from across the atlantic.

Many in the UK will hope Hatton has ended the “curse” that has seen names such as Frank Bruno, Naseem Hamed, Barry McGuigan and others fall short while headlining fights on “The Strip”.

From here, it is widely believed “The Hitman” will move on to fight Jose Luis Castillo in June, again likely in Vegas.

Try These 3 Ways To Get Someone Back In Your Life Again}

Filed under: Used Cars — Admin @ 3:13 pm

Submitted by: Edgar Heartily

Once you lose the love of your life, its not so easy to get them back in your life again; although its not rocket science to get the job done either. There are several proven ways of getting over relationship break ups and rebuilding the lost faith. If you follow the right path it shouldnt take too long for you to get someone back in your life.

Communication is Key

The very basic thing in this regard is to communicate with your ex on a regular basis. Unless you communicate that you still care about your partner, and your feelings are still very much the same towards her; it will be literally impossible to get someone back in your life. It would be as bad as trying to keep a fish alive after taking her out of water. Always remember that if you let your partner feel betrayed you can forget about getting them back; you may never even get to see their face ever again in life. On the other hand, if you keep communicating on a regular basis, slowly but surely, youll succeed in sowing the seed of romance once again.

Secondly, after the break-up, if your partner doesnt wish to talk about whatever happened and refuses to accept you back into her life, you can always put forward the hand of friendship. You can always get closer to your ex once again, if you continue to be friends. However, if you stay out of touch, there is a good chance that your ex may decide to enter into a relationship with someone else, closing all the doors of make up in the future.

The third and the most important thing that you must understand is that relationships dont break in a moment. All these break-ups are the outcome of happenings over past few weeks/months or probably even years. Your partner might have been patient enough to hold on to this relationship for that long, but one day, she might have decided to put an end to it. It could appear to be a hasty decision, but dont forget that it was you who had unknowingly sown the seeds of hatred in her heart, over time. So definitely you must try to recall all your wrong acts in the past, and analyze the things that hurt your partner. Think about what she might have expected from your end, which you failed to accomplish.

You can never get someone back in your life, unless youre willing to learn from your mistakes and never repeat them in future. Its not about saying sorry or I love you, but reflecting the same through your actions as well. It is quite impossible that your partner doesnt give 100 percent from her side, when she sees that youre trying your level best to correct all your mistakes; as well as trying to ensure that similar mishaps dont happen in the future. You dont need to pluck the stars to get someone back, its all about changing your attitude and walking that extra mile to win back your sweetheart.

Smoke from massive warehouse fire in Buffalo, New York USA can be seen 40 miles away

Filed under: Uncategorized — Admin @ 3:25 pm

Monday, May 14, 2007

Buffalo, New York —A massive warehouse complex of at least 5 buildings caught on fire in Buffalo, New York on 111 Tonawanda Street, sending a plume of thick, jet black colored smoke into the air that could be seen as far away as 40 miles.

As of 6:40 a.m., the fire was under control, and firefighters were attempting to stop it from spreading, but could not get to the center of the fire because of severe amounts of debris. Later in the morning, the fire was extinguished.

“The fire is mostly under debris at this point. It’s under control, but it’s under some debris. We really can’t get to it. We’re just going to have to keep on pouring water on it so it doesn’t spread,” said Thomas Ashe, the fire chief for the North Buffalo based fire division who also added that at one point, at least 125 firefighters were on the scene battling the blaze. One suffered minor injures and was able to take himself to the hospital to seek medical attention.

Shortly after 8:00 p.m. as many as 3 explosions rocked the warehouse sending large mushroom clouds of thick black smoke into the air. After the third explosion, heat could be felt more than 100 feet away. The fire started in the front, one story building then quickly spread to three others, but fire fighters managed to stop the flames from spreading onto the 3 story building all the way at the back.

According to a Buffalo Police officer, who wished not to be named, the fire began at about 7:00 p.m. [Eastern time], starting as a one alarm fire. By 8:00 p.m., three fire companies were on the scene battling the blaze. Police also say that a smaller fire was reported in the same building on Saturday night, which caused little damage.

At the start of the fire, traffic was backed up nearly 4 miles on the 198 expressway going west toward the 190 Interstate and police had to shut down the Tonawanda street exit because the road is too close to the fire.

At one point, traffic on the 198 was moving so slow, at least a dozen people were seen getting out of their cars and walking down the expressway to watch the fire. That prompted as many as 10 police cars to be dispatched to the scene to force individuals back into their cars and close off one of the 2 lanes on the westbound side.

One woman, who wished not to be named as she is close to the owner of the warehouse, said the building is filled with “classic cars, forklifts, and money” and that owner “does not have insurance” coverage on the property. The building is not considered abandoned, but firefighters said that it is vacant.

Officials in Fort Erie, Ontario were also swamped with calls to fire departments when the wind blew the smoke over the Niagra River and into Canada.

It is not known what caused the fire, but a car is suspected to have caught on fire and there are reports from police and hazmat crews, that there were also large barrels of diesel fuel being stored in one building. Firefighters say the cause of the blaze is being treated as “suspicious.” The ATF is investigating the fire and will bring dogs in to search the debris.

Darling announces UK budget for 2009

Filed under: Uncategorized — Admin @ 3:14 pm

Thursday, April 23, 2009

The United Kingdom Chancellor of the Exchequer, Alistair Darling, yesterday announced the 2009 budget. The budget is an annual audit of the nation’s finances, and decides what should be done with taxpayers’ money.

The chancellor fell under scorn for his GDP growth forecasts, which are considered to be too optimistic in predicting that Britain will bounce back from its weakest economic performance since the end of the second world war. Darling forecast GDP growth of 3.5% in 2011, even after he was made to downgrade his predictions. He expects a record expansion of 1.25% next year, but chief UK economist Howard Archer disagrees, calling Darling’s predictions “mildly optimistic in the near term and much more optimistic in the long term.”

HAVE YOUR SAY
Was the increase in the ISA limit “too little, too late”?
Add or view comments

His plans for savers and pensioners, however, were commended by many, though was also criticised by a large portion of the populace. In the budget, Darling increased the amount that savers can put into an Individual Savings Account (ISA) from £7,200 to £10,200, of which £5,100 can be saved in cash. These increased limits will be available only to people aged over 50 from 6 October this year, and will not be available to everyone until 6 April next year. A number of financial experts described the move as being “too little, too late”, and Rumina Hassam, of price comparison website uSwitch.com, said: “The government’s decision to increase the cash ISA limit by £1,500 to £5,100 for the over 50’s is a just another kick in the teeth for the majority of savers as they will have to wait even longer to benefit. There is no doubt that savers have been sacrificed as a result of the plummeting base rate, bringing savings rates to an all time low.”
