Final Harry Potter book goes on sale

Filed under: Uncategorized — Admin @ 4:49 pm

Saturday, July 21, 2007

The final Harry Potter book in the series, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, has gone on sale today. The book was launched simultaneously across the world.

The book launched first in the UK, where the book went on sale from midnight. Fans in one central London bookshop started joining the queue from 10:30 p.m., which soon reached the door of the shop and out onto the street. The book chain Waterstone’s held ‘Harry Potter parties’, giving out free glasses of wine and snacks. The mood was good-natured and jolly, with some fans dressed up in costume.

New Zealand fans of the series had a launch time of 11.01 a.m. (NZST). Due to high competition among major retail chains, the book was being sold for as little as NZ$32.99 at Whitcoulls; a profit margin of four cents with each book sold. The recommended retail price was NZ$55.00. Many supermarkets in the UK cut prices even further as a publicity stunt with, for example, ASDA selling copies at a loss, at about 1/4 of the recommended retail price.

It was also an early release for Australian fans of the series, at 9.01 a.m. (Sydney). A Sydney Borders store had a line reaching out halfway across the street. In Brisbane City, Borders had a line from the shop, down the street and around the corner.

150 fans in New Zealand’s capital, Wellington, were waiting outside a Border’s bookstore at 8.00 a.m. to be some of the first to get their hands on a copy. A bookstore nearby, Dymocks, also had a large crowd, an estimated 100 people were waiting. One person arriving there at 6.30 a.m. At one New Zealand Whitcoulls store, they had a entertainer/magician keeping fans entertained while waiting for 11.01 a.m. In Germany, however, some bookshops were disappointed with the turnout for the Harry Potter book launch events.

The Harry Potter series has already sold 325 million copies worldwide. 1.3 million of those were sold in New Zealand, a quarter of New Zealand’s population. The Wikipedia article on the latest book became disabled for editing by unregistered and newly registered users within 5 minutes of the book’s release.

Canadian woman gives birth while sitting on toilet

Filed under: Uncategorized — Admin @ 4:42 pm

Friday, December 18, 2009

International media attention has been a harsh mistress for 32-year-old Heather Richard of Winnipeg, Manitoba, who gave birth on Sunday while sitting on the toilet. Richard, who believed she was barren and thus assumed she could not be pregnant, thought she was suffering from cramps and a bad bowel movement.

Do you believe it’s possible for a woman to not know she is pregnant until her baby’s birth?

“I kept getting the urge to push and just thought it was a real bad bowel movement,” Richard told the Winnipeg Sun, whose interview was picked up by the Canadian wire service. “It just fell out. I thought it was my intestines, so I’m freaking out…but then it’s a little boy.” Richard realized that the product was a baby and not her insides when its leg twitched.

Relatives of Richard’s found her hysterically crying and pointing at the toilet. “She was crying and saying, ‘Help me, get my baby out of the toilet, he’s drowning,” Keith Richard, her cousin, told the Sun. While the rest of the family was immobile by the revelation, police officers knocked on her front door; she was to be arrested due to outstanding warrants that Richard says have since been cleared.

One officer performed CPR on the baby and it was rushed to the hospital. The baby, since named Isaiah, weighed five pounds, nine ounces, and suffered a skull fracture, presumably as a result of his head hitting the toilet bowl. The baby is in stable condition and Richard is recovering from her birth at home.

The incident spread like wildfire in the Canadian and international press on Tuesday and Wednesday. When asked about the coverage, Richard told the website canoe.ca that she was embarrassed at all the fuss the story generated.

Active Computer Spyware Threats

Filed under: Computer Security Service — Admin @ 3:37 pm

Submitted by: Will Jones

Computer Spyware is a form of malware which will infect your computer without permission and can be used to steal your private information. Spyware has been used to log keystrokes made on your computer and send sensitive email and banking information to remotely located hackers, change your default home and search engine pages, and serve as a gateway for download of additional malware to your computer. The number of Spyware threats on the Internet increases daily! Spyware can come in many disguises to include adware, fake anti-spyware programs, and other legitimate files and applications. Five of the top Spyware Threats are: 1 – Fake XPA Trojan Virus, 2 – BaiduSadar 3 – Barracuda Spyware, 4 – GameVance, and 5 – HotBar.

Spyware Threat #1 – Win32/Fake XPA Trojan Virus

The FakeXPA iTrojan Virus also functions as Spyware once installed on your computer. It hides its real purpose of data mining, hacking your computer, spreading additional Malware, Spyware, and Adware. This FakeXPA is a kind of family of programs, which will claim to scan the system for malware and after scanning, it issues fake warning like malicious viruses and programs have been detected. This will tell the user to pay money in order to register for the software so that non-existent threats can be removed. FakeXPA may display a dialog that exactly mimics the Windows Security Center to trick unsuspecting computer users. Removal of Fake XPA is considered critical for your online safety.

Spyware Threat #2 – Barracuda Spyware

Barracuda Spyware is a fake anti-spyware program that tricks you into thinking your computer is infected. Barracuda will then attempt to convince you that its promoted product must be downloaded in order to remove the infection from your computer. Unfortunately, if you buy the product, the computer becomes even more infected! Other names for the Barracuda Spyware are: FakeAler-C, SpywareProtect2009, FakeAV-LS, Adware.SpywareProtect 2009, FaudPack.kho, Antivirus System Pro, Barracuda Antivirus, Security Central, and FakeSpyPro. Barracuda Spyware removal is critical in order to prevent continued malware download to your computer.

Spyware Threat #3 – Win32/BaiduSadar

Win32.Baidu Sobar is considered to be a browser modifier version of adware. It ill install a web browser toolbar on your Internet Browser and then deliver a significant number of pop-up advertisements and will change your default search engine page. Although by itself, BaiduSadar does not carry a malicious payload, the webpages that it forces you to surf to in place of Google, MSN, and Yahoo are capable of delivering a destructive payload to your computer. If infected with BaiduSadar, you should focus on Spyware removal.

Spyware Threat #4 – Win32/Hotbar

Adware Hotbar will display a toolbar and targeted pop-up ads on your computer based on your Internet surfing history. Hotbar s toolbar will appear in both Internet and Windows Explorer on computers that run the Windows Operating System. When you click a button on the toolbar it will open a webpage that will open a different advertising website. The Hotbar malware will report your browsing history and other information to a remotely located server without permission. It should be removed upon detection.

Spyware Threat #5 – Game Vance – Adware

Game Vance Adware refers to advertisements that display ads on your computer and track usage in exchange for free game play at http://gamevance.com. When you register for the Game Vance free game play service, one agrees to allow the ads run on their computer. After the End User Licensing Agreement is signed, however, you will have a significant number of advertisements displayed on your computer that can prove difficult to remove. If you have signed up for the Game Vance Adware, it should be removed since the program will send your private information without permission to a remotely located server.

Free Home Maintenance Tips From Professional House Cleaners

Filed under: Kitchen Designer — Admin @ 3:52 pm

By Vincent Platania

Keeping your house clean, both inside and out, is more than a matter of aesthetics. Leaf-choked gutters and grimy buildup can encourage the growth of mold, spores and other allergens that can make your family sick. In addition, they take a toll on the structure of your house, contributing to decay and musty, unhealthy odors. The cost of not doing home maintenance can be trips to the emergency room and calls to contractors to repair leaky pipes, clogged gutters and more.

You can prevent most of that – and have a more comfortable house to live in – by keeping a housekeeping chores list of simple home maintenance tips and checking it off regularly. Here’s a dozen suggestions from professional house cleaners that can help you keep your house in tiptop shape.

Outside Maintenance Housekeeping Chores List

Keep drainage spouts and gutters free of debris and leaves so that water can drain freely. You can use a gutter scoop – a trowel that’s made especially for cleaning out gutters – to scoop out leaves and debris, and finish up with a powerful spray from a garden hose or a small pressure washer. Clean gutters will save your roof, your paint job and your siding. Waterlogged roofs and gutters will cost you big money in the long run.

Clean debris and soil around downspouts and make sure that water is directed away from the foundation. A formed downspout apron of PVC or cement can help make sure that drainage doesn’t settle around the foundation where it can eat away at the cement or leak into your basement.

Acid rain, air pollution and general dirt and dust can eat away at your house’s siding or paint. To keep it in top shape, wash it down in the spring and fall using a pressure washer and a detergent made specifically for washing away outdoor dirt and grit (Pressure Washer Multi-Purpose House Wash)

Make window washing easy on your back with a long handled squeegee and brush combination (Window Brush). The long handle lets you reach all the way to the top of windows without stretching, the brush scrubs away dirt without elbow grease, and the squeegee leaves a clean, streak-free shine.

For the house and siding, choose a similar tool (Dual Surface Scrub Brush) – with a durable foam pad and a scrub brush for those tough stains from acid rain.

Keep all plantings at least 18 inches away from the foundation of the house. Any closer, and you risk roots pushing through the cement and into your basement. Once a month during spring/summer/fall, do a visual inspection of the plantings around your house, and trim away loose branches that might fall and damage property later.

Check the flashings around chimneys, skylights and chimney for leaks in the spring and fall to keep your house watertight. Repairing at the first sign of a leak will save you hundreds or even thousands of dollars you’d end up spending to repair the damage if you let it go.

Australian health workers to close intensive care units in Victoria next week

Filed under: Uncategorized — Admin @ 3:21 pm

Thursday, March 13, 2008

Members of Australia’s Health Services Union (HSU) will go on strike in Victoria next week in a dispute over stalled wage and career structure negotiations. Over 5000 physiotherapists, speech pathologists and radiation therapists will walk off the job next week, effectively closing the state’s 68 largest health services.

The strike will force the closure of intensive care units and emergency departments across the state.

It is feared the strike could continue into Easter.

National secretary of the HSU, Kathy Jackson said admissions would be crippled, while intensive care patients would have to be evacuated to New South Wales, Tasmania and South Australia as hospitals will not be able to perform tests or administer treatment.

“When an ambulance shows up you can’t admit a patient without an X-ray being available, you can’t intubate them and you can’t operate on them,” she said.

“If something goes wrong in an ICU you need to be able to X-ray, use nuclear medicine or any diagnostic procedure,” said Ms Jackson.

Ms Jackson said the HSU offered arbitration last year, but the state government refused. “They’re not interested in settling disputes, they hope that we are just going to go away.”

“We’re not going away, we’ve gone back and balloted the whole public health workforce in Victoria, those ballots were successful, 97 percent approval rating,” she said.

The HSU is urging the government to commence serious negotiations to resolve the dispute before industrial action commenced.

The government has offered the union a 3.25 per cent pay increase, in line with other public sector workers but the union has demanded more, but stopped short of specifying a figure.

Victorian Premier John Brumby said the claim would be settled according to the government’s wages policy. “The Government is always willing and wanting to sit down and negotiate with the relevant organisations . . . we have a wages policy based around an increase of 3.25 per cent and, above that, productivity offset,” he told parliament.

The union claims it is also arguing against a lack of career structure, which has caused many professionals to leave the health service. Ms Jackson said wages and career structures in Victoria were behind other states.

Victorian Opposition Leader Ted Baillieu said he was not in support of the proposed strike and called on the government to meet with unions. “There could not be a more serious threat to our health system than has been announced today.”

“We now have to do whatever is possible to stop this strike from proceeding,” he said.

The opposition leader will meet with the union at 11:30 AM today.

Victorian Hospitals Industry Association industrial relations services manager Simon Chant said hospitals were looking at the possible impact and warned that patients may have to be evacuated interstate if the strike goes ahead.

U.S. government to improve recruitment for civil service jobs

Filed under: Uncategorized — Admin @ 4:50 pm

Tuesday, May 2, 2006

According to the Washington Post, nearly sixty percent of the federal government’s workforce will be eligible for retirement over the next ten years; with ninety percent of senior executive service officials expected to do so. Besides depleting Social Security funds, baby boomers will once again leave a big impression on the American workforce and economy. Calling it a “federal retirement tsunami,” the United States Office of Personnel Management (the bureau responsible for government human resources) is preparing for this event in a few manners. In a news release today by the bureau, Director Linda Springer announced that the office would be releasing a major media campaign in efforts to recruit future employees.

With only twenty four percent of United States citizens with a bachelor degree or higher, according to the U.S. Census Bureau, it’s no wonder it has been difficult to attract qualified or interested employees for federal government positions; particularly young people. “We’ve been hearing for so long about how incompetent and shady the government is, but a lot don’t understand the benefits,” said Howard University sophomore Victoria Hooks.

“The challenge is clear, and we are hard at work… with a 21st Century approach to the workplace, the federal government will ride the retirement wave and set the standard for a modern workplace… It will be a modern workplace, one that requires innovative training and encourage more flexibility by managers. The federal workforce will be one that the American people can count on,” said Springer in support of the initiatives for recruitment. Other efforts for recruitment will also include additional employment benefits such as special salaries and relocation bonuses, especially for women.

The recruitment advertisements will reveal themselves in a series of four commercials around the country beginning in mid May 2006.

Three rural councils in New South Wales, Australia enter 7-day lockdown

Filed under: Uncategorized — Admin @ 4:36 pm

Wednesday, July 21, 2021

A week-long lockdown began at midnight yesterday in the City of Orange, Blayney Shire, and Cabonne Shire local government areas in New South Wales (NSW), Australia, after a local resident was infected with COVID-19 by a truck driver at the Nestlé Purina PetCare food factory in Blayney, which the driver had visited daily from July 13 to 16.

The decision to go into lockdown follows what ABC News described as a “crisis cabinet meeting” of the New South Wales government. Under the new regulations, residents of the three areas will only be permitted to leave their homes for “essential” reasons. Shops, schools, and construction are remaining open. Five sites in Orange have been listed as exposure venues, and people who visited one or more are advised by NSW Health to get tested for the coronavirus and to self-isolate for two weeks.

A lockdown in the Greater Sydney area, including the Blue Mountains, Wollongong, Shellharbour, and Central Coast, has been ongoing since June 26 due to an outbreak of the Delta variant of COVID-19. New South Wales yesterday recorded 78 new cases of COVID-19. The Western NSW Local Health District has put hospitals on red alert, limiting visits.

4 Tips When Selecting Cheap Car Shipping Service

Filed under: Insurance — Admin @ 3:09 pm

By Ricky Lim

There are many car shipping companies nowadays providing a variety of car shipping services. By far, the cheapest and most economical way of shipping a car is by using open multi car carriers.

These carriers are huge trucks that can carry up to 10 cars at one time. You may have seen some of these on the roads before. They usually have 2 levels and can carry 4 to 5 cars on each level. Because they are so long and high, they are limited to travel along major highways and roads with no obstruction of low hanging trees and bridges.

When shopping around for cheap car shipping services, there are a couple of pointers you need to bear in mind

1) Federal Car Shipping License

All car shipping companies need to be registered with a federal license before they are allowed to ship cars. Make sure you ask the car shipping company for proof that they carry the federal license.

2) Extra Cost

Some car shipping companies appear to offer very cheap transport services but in fact, there are many hidden cost that they do not state upfront.

Make sure you check with the company the total cost of shipping up front before signing the agreement letter. Examples of hidden cost are usually fuel surcharges, car insurance and extra charges for shipping to your house.

3) Door to Door Or Terminal To Terminal

Not all car shipping services will ship the car to your house. Some car shipping companies only deliver to major cities and towns and will deposit your car in a terminal. From there, you will collect your car. There are also some companies that charges additional fees for shipping to your house.

In any case, make sure you ask the car shipping company whether they provide door to door delivery for terminal to terminal delivery. In most cases, terminal to terminal is cheaper.

4) Shipping Insurance

Make sure you have sufficient insurance coverage when shipping your car. Some car shipping companies already factor in the insurance in the total shipping cost while others require additional cost.

It’s also important to know what you are being covered. Most car shipping insurance cover against damage and loss of vehicles up to a certain amount. Make sure you know all the details before signing the agreement.

With so many cheap car shipping services available today, you should take your time and search for a few car shipping quotes before deciding on one.
