Police report drug haul seizure worth up to £30 million in Brownhills, England

Filed under: Uncategorized — Admin @ 3:22 pm

Monday, December 2, 2013

Police in the West Midlands in England today said nearly 200 kilograms worth of drugs with value possibly as great as £30 million (about US$49 million or €36 million) has been seized from a unit in the town of Brownhills. In what an officer described as “one of the largest [seizures] in the force’s 39 year history”, West Midlands Police reported recovering six big cellophane-wrapped cardboard boxes containing cannabis, cocaine, and MDMA (“ecstasy”) in a police raid operation on the Maybrook Industrial Estate in the town on Wednesday.

The impact this seizure will have on drug dealing in the region and the UK as a whole cannot be underestimated

The seized boxes, which had been loaded onto five freight pallets, contained 120 one-kilogram bags of cannabis, 50 one-kilogram bags of MDMA, and five one-kilogram bricks of cocaine. In a press release, West Midlands Police described what happened after officers found the drugs as they were being unloaded in the operation. “When officers opened the boxes they discovered a deep layer of protective foam chips beneath which the drugs were carefully layered”, the force said. “All the drugs were wrapped in thick plastic bags taped closed with the cannabis vacuum packed to prevent its distinctive pungent aroma from drawing unwanted attention.” Police moved the drugs via forklift truck to a flatbed lorry to remove them.

Detective Sergeant Carl Russell of West Midlands Police’s Force CID said the seizure was the largest he had ever made in the 24 years he has been in West Midlands Police and one of the biggest seizures the force has made since its formation in 1974. “The impact this seizure will have on drug dealing in the region and the UK as a whole cannot be underestimated”, he said. “The drugs had almost certainly been packed to order ready for shipping within Britain but possibly even further afield. Our operation will have a national effect and we are working closely with a range of law enforcement agencies to identify those involved in this crime at whatever level.”

Expert testing on the drugs is ongoing. Estimates described as “conservative” suggest the value of the drugs amounts to £10 million (about US$16.4 million or €12 million), although they could be worth as much as £30 million, subject to purity tests, police said.

Police arrested three men at the unit on suspicion of supplying a controlled drug. The men, a 50-year-old from Brownhills, a 51-year-old from the Norton area of Stoke-on-Trent in Staffordshire, and one aged 53 from Brownhills, have been released on bail as police investigations to “hunt those responsible” continue. West Midlands Police told Wikinews no person has yet been charged in connection with the seizure. Supplying a controlled drug is an imprisonable offence in England, although length of jail sentences vary according to the class and quantity of drugs and the significance of offenders’ roles in committing the crime.

Arkla Gas Bbq Grills And Bbq Grill Replacement Parts For Arkla, Embermatic, Preway Barbecues

Filed under: Kitchen Home Improvement — Admin @ 3:18 pm

By Jason Broderick

Arkla is one of the oldest names in the grilling industry, as the company has been credited with designing one of the first outdoor gas grills. This was done because Arkla Embermatic, which is actually the Arkansas Louisiana Gas Company, wanted to sell more natural gas to its customers. As a result, these grills became a regular household item, as many people were sick of dealing with briquettes and lighter fluid. Arkla grills grew in popularity and other companies began selling similar items.

Even though this company is no longer involved in the grilling industry, there are a lot of these grills in daily use. Arkla barbecues and many manufacturers from an older, different era of quality made commodities that were built to last many years. The H burners and Oval burners used in older model barbecue grills are easily replaced and the rest of the grills can easily function for many decades of outdoor barbecuing.

Many Arkla Embermatic grills date back to the 1960s, so it can be difficult to track down replacement grill parts. One of the most common problems with these grills is that the burner stops functioning which is easy to fix. The majority of the GR40 models feature a larger cooking area and use an H-burner. There are a number of different styles of H-burners but there were dozens of manufacturers each with dozens of models who all used the same design of H burner, if not the exact same size with double and single venturi tubes to attach to the grill valves. Most of the 3000 and 4000 level Arkla grills also use this style of burner, while the smaller grills used an oval styled burner. All of these burners are made from stainless steel or a thick cast iron.

Heat shields on an older Arka BBQ grill will eventually corrode and the type of Arkla replacement vaporizer shield will be dependent on the size and model of the grill. The 2000 and 3000 level grill use a 10 5/8″ x 18 1/4″ shield, the 4000, 5000 and GB models use a 10 5/8″ x 20 1/2″ or a 10 5/8″ x 23 3/4″ shield. It is useful to know the Arkla grill model number in order to find the right replacement heat shield but often grill repairs can use the same product from a different model or make of gas grill. Most BBQ grills will be designed with either a grid to support lava rocks or a vaporizer shield. A briquette grid is designed to add heat at the grilling surface by conducting heat while the vaporizer plate is designed to spread convectional heat while deflecting dropping grease while barbecuing. The vast majority of Arkla Embermatic barbecues used lava rocks grids. Grids are easily replaced and are available in hundreds of sizes.

The Arkla BBQ replacement rock grates are dependant on the size of the grill indicated by the model. The majority of the 2000 level grills, along with some of the larger ones, use a 10 3/16″ x 18 3/16″ grate, while most of the 3000 and 4000 level models require an 11 5/8″ x 17 1/4″ grate. There are a few 3000 and 4000 level grills that use a 11 3/4″ x 19″ or 11 3/4″ x 20″ rock grate, although the largest grills that are offered by this company go all the way up to 12 1/2″ x 27 1/4″. Replacement briquette grids can be off-sized as long as the depth from fron to back within the fire box is correct. Because the grid mounts in the barbeque grill firebox front and back this must be measured but the width from left to right can be a few sizes too small and still properly conduct heat for barbecuing. All of these products are made from carbon steel or cast iron that has been porcelain enameled or galvanized and designed hold up against all kinds of use and outdoor weather.

Arkla grills were sold at Sears under the Kenmore name during the 1980s. Through its long history, Kenmore barbeque grills have been manufactured by a large number of grill companies and importers. As a true manufacturer, Arkla made solid products under the Arkla name but also Embermatic and Preway built to last for many decades regardless of extreme heat, rain and freezing snow. The Arkla Embermatic barbecue grills that are still in use are grilling strong in both residential and commercial environments and are certainly worth repairing. Even the best made gas grills need gas grill replacement parts from time to time but the Arkla barbecues are reliably built for decades of use with minimal grill repairs.

Police searching for the remains of missing Bathurst woman Janine Vaughan have discovered bones which they claim may belong to the missing woman. Ms Vaughan disappeared after being seen getting into a red car with a male after being a Bathurst pub on December 7, 2001.

On Sunday, police began a fresh search for the missing woman’s remains after they received new information. On Monday at approximately 3:00 p.m. AEST police discovered bones during a ground sweep of an area off Montavella Road, Gormans Hill adjacent to the Macquarie River. Forensic services police were bought in several hours later, but initial tests proved inconclusive.

Police were guarding the site overnight and forensic officers are expected to conduct further tests today.

Police also search bushland near a creek at Yetholme, 15 km East of Bathurst on Monday using two specialist cadaver dogs on loan from Queensland Police.

Police have revealed that the search has prompted several members of the local community to call the police’s Crime Stoppers hotline with information. Chief Superintendent Mark Holahan said “It’s a cross-section of information. Some of it will probably lead us to some new lines of inquiry, and some of it will help us to reaffirm some of those things we already know.”

The detective who led the initial investigation into Ms Vaughan’s disappearance for several days continues to be a person of interest to police in the case. The detective, Brad Hosemans, is also a former deputy mayor of the city. Mr Hosemans, who has since left the police force, has denied any involvement.

Chief Supt. Holahan said the former detective was only one of a number of persons of interest in the case.

The Police Integrity Commission has investigated the initial handling of the case but is yet to hand down a finding.

Automobile sales in the United States down sharply

Filed under: Uncategorized — Admin @ 3:04 pm

Tuesday, February 3, 2009

Sales of automobiles in the United States fell as much as 35% in January, compared to the same month a year ago, as manufacturers reported their January sales.

Ford Motor Company NYSEF sales dropped 42% last month from the previous year. General Motors NYSEGM reported a 49% decline. Chrysler was hardest hit among the domestically owned manufacturers with a plunge of 55%.

The decline in sales has not been limited to just US manufacturers. Japanese automaker Toyota NYSETM reported a 32% drop in US sales from a year earlier, Nissan MotorsNASDAQNSANY dropped 30%, and Honda NYSEHMC sales dropped 28%.

Subaru and South Korean Hyundai Motor Company LSEHYUD were two of the few auto firms that reported an increase in sales. They posted gains of eight and fourteen percent, respectively.

On an annual basis, sales overall have also been plummeting. Industry-wide US car sales dropped 18% last year to 13.2 million automobiles.

GM announced today that it will offer voluntary buyouts to 22,000 employees in the US, in an effort to reduce its expenditures.

Last month, GM and Chrysler were given loans worth US$17.4 billion from the government after they warned of imminent bankruptcy.

The base year considered for the study is 2019, and the market size is projected from 2020 to 2028.

Artificial Tendons and Ligaments Market Dynamics

Majorly, the injuries from sports and athletes drive the market growth; besides, the development in surgery techniques, increasing government initiatives to encourage sports and the development in the surgical processes will also result in enhancing the adoption of synthetic tendons, thereby augmenting the growth of the artificial tendons and ligaments market.

Growing awareness about the updated advanced surgical procedure and introduction of emerging treatments such as anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), active biosynthetic composite (ABC), along with the incidence of advanced growing penetration of hospitals in rural regions also anticipates the market growth.

The market also favors growth by the adoption of technological advancements for the invention of the hi-tech machine for risk-free surgeries with the increasing healthcare expenditure and rising medical tourism.

The benefits of artificial ligaments over autografts and allografts, advancements in knee substitution methodology, and the collaboration between market players, schools, and universities for the development of better artificial tendons and ligaments also propels the market growth. However, the accessibility of alternative procedures with high failure rates of surgeries, high cost, and unfavorable reimbursement scenarios hampers market growth.

Besides, the ongoing research activities and the market expansion in developing regions serve to create market opportunities. Whereas, the intense competition among the key players, lack of skilled and trained doctors, and the lack of evidence favoring the efficiency of artificial tendons and ligaments serve to be challenging factors declining the market growth.

Toothpaste fills cavities without drilling

Filed under: Uncategorized — Admin @ 3:25 pm

A paste containing synthetic tooth enamel can seal small cavities without drilling. Kazue Yamagishi and colleagues at the FAP Dental Institute in Tokyo say that the paste can repair small cavities in 15 minutes.

Currently, fillers don’t stick to such small cavities so dentists must drill bigger holes. Hydroxyapatite crystals, of which natural enamel is made, bond with teeth to repair tiny areas of damage.

Yamagishi and colleagues have tested their paste on a lower premolar tooth that showed early signs of decay. They found that the synthetic enamel merged with the natural enamel. The synthetic enamel also appears to make teeth stronger which will improve resistance to future decay. As with drilling, however, there is still the potential for pain: The paste is strongly acidic to encourage crystal growth and causes inflammation if it touches the gums.

The paste is reported in the journal Nature.

Death toll from Borneo bridge collapse reaches eleven

Filed under: Uncategorized — Admin @ 3:21 pm

Monday, November 28, 2011

The death toll from the weekend suspension bridge collapse on the Indonesian island of Borneo has risen from four to eleven. Search and rescue teams continue to look for bodies in the Mahakam River.

The number of wounded is currently 39 injured; reports from locals suggest 33 people remain missing at the scene in East Kalimantan’s Kutai Kartanegara district, where “Kalimantan’s Golden Gate Bridge” linked the towns of Tenggarong and the regional capital, Samarinda. A six-month-old baby is among the dead.

Cars, motorbikes, and buses all fell into the Mahakam River when the bridge came down during repairs. Another car was left overturned and balanced upon wreckage over the water. State-owned builders PT Hutama Karya completed the bridge about a decade ago in the image of California’s Golden Gate Bridge. A cable on the 720-metre structure is thought to have failed as workers dealt with it; six of the repair crew were reported missing yesterday. It had been the longest suspension bridge in Borneo.

Eyewitnesses described heavy traffic at the time of the collapse, and one survivor said he left his truck to investigate a traffic jam. Some people were left trapped by debris as the bridge came down. “It happened so fast, only about 30 seconds,” according to National Disaster Management Agency spokesman Sutopo Nugoroho.

National search and rescue head Daryatmo said yesterday cranes will attempt to move debris today, with new reports saying echo-sounding equipment will be used to check it is safe to begin lifting. It is believed the bodies of more victims will be found trapped in vehicles beneath the water, which is 35-40 metres deep. Visibility is poor, and one official explained authorities are still unsure how many vehicles are on the riverbed.

“The above-water search is continuing, but underwater operations have not been carried out because we’re worried that the bridge’s pylons are unstable and could collapse any time,” said Nugoroho today. He explained that bodies had washed onto the riverbanks overnight and were recovered today.

The president, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, has sent three ministers to the site to investigate the accident, while Bambang Widaryatmo, head of East Kalimantan’s police, promised “parties found to be negligent will be prosecuted”. The government has promised a replacement ferry service. The river is closed to boats as rescue operations continue, and a 22-strong team has been dispatched from the national police, comprising six forensics experts, five disaster victim identification specialists, and eleven investigators. They are there to augment the East Kalimantan Police. Health Minister Endang Rahayu Sedyaningsih yesterday visited survivors in Parikesit Hospital and promised them medical treatment at government expense.

Some people swam ashore after falling, with the aftermath filled with screams. Survivor Syakrani, 24, yesterday asserted “The authorities should have closed the bridge if it was under repair.” His words were followed by a Jakarta Globe editorial declaring the accident “unacceptable”.

The Globe went on to comment upon suggestions corruption may have played a role; “It is too early to point fingers and look to place blame, but if shoddy materials were used in the building of the bridge, those responsible must answer to the public.” Another suggestion is coal barges striking the bridge may have weakened it. Local coal company Harum Energy lost five percent of its share value today amid fears the river blockage will hamper their ability to ship coal.

Samarinda’s seen a population and construction boom lately. A few years have seen the population triple and the construction of a large mosque, and a sports stadium; an airport and port are set to follow. However, the Corruption Eradication Commission warns 70% of the corruption it investigates concerns government contracts and up to 40% of money earmarked for infrastructure ends up stolen.
