Bring In The Luck Of The Irish With A Claddagh Wedding Theme}

Filed under: Networkings Solutions — Admin @ 3:44 pm

Submitted by: Renee West

Claddagh wedding themes can be both cultural and decorative, depending on how far you want to carry the theme throughout the wedding. Whether you come from Irish descent or simply appreciate the culture, a Claddagh wedding needs to follow a few traditions. If you are unsure how to put in your own personal flare, but still keep to the traditions of a Celtic wedding, here are a few decorative ideas to make your theme come to life.

Suggested Color Scheme

The colors for a traditional Claddagh wedding should stick to ivory, white and greens. You do not have to use bright greens, but keep it within the green family by utilizing pastel or neon colors instead. Integrate gold or silver accents to keep with the traditional colors, while adding some elegance.

Flower Arrangement and Bouquets

Your flowers should follow the color scheme of the wedding. Some traditional flowers that can be used are roses and lilies, but no one flower is a tradition for this type of theme. Shamrocks, however, are a traditional greenery found in Celtic weddings; therefore you should find a way to integrate them into your arrangements. Depending on the time of year, your florist may be able to include some clover in the dcor and/or your bouquets and boutonnieres.

Keep your flowers simple and in line with the colors. Green can be used for both flowers and fillers in your floral arrangements. For example, ivory roses and peonies can be paired with green hydrangea and green rose leaves. Talk to your florist about how to pair your traditional Celtic wedding colors with your floral arrangements.

Table Decorations

Decorate your tables using traditional taste, but with a few modern twists. Use ivory or white tablecloths and integrate green or silver table runners to keep the setting very classic. Centerpieces can be made from flowers or you can utilize pillar candles tied with green and silver ribbon. Use elegant chinaware that is white or ivory and has either green accents or silver accents. Escort cards can be attached to Celtic knot place card holders and guests names listed on ivory or white cardstock using silver or green font. You could even name tables after different locations in Ireland.

Wedding Cake and Food

Stick to the tradition of Irish food by serving a menu full of Celtic recipes. Try pot roasts, roasted potatoes and very hearty dishes, which the Irish culture is known for. Do not be afraid to talk to your caterer about ways to make your menu more modern, but still incorporating traditional recipes. For example, rather than serving whole baked potatoes, offer puffed potato bites or a do-it-yourself baked potato station with different toppings.

For the wedding cake, keep the decorations simple, such as white or ivory fondant accented with silver or green ribbon borders. Use a Claddagh cake topper to finish off your cake and integrate roses or shamrocks as part of the floral topper and cake table decorations. Try fun flavors for your wedding cake such as Irish Crme.

Wedding Favors

Though many of your guests will not be aware of Irish traditions, try to culturally educate them with favors themed after your Claddagh wedding. Give away Celtic knot key chains or bookmarks. Four leaf clover soaps and bath salts using traditional Irish scents are always welcomed by guests too. Give away edible treats such as Irish soda bread wrapped in muslin, mini cakes or mint tins.

Apple to hold media event on September 1, may update iPods and Apple TV

Filed under: Uncategorized — Admin @ 3:06 pm

Friday, August 27, 2010

Apple Inc. will hold a music-centered event in San Francisco, California on September 1. It has been widely speculated that the company will introduce an updated line of iPod portable music players and a new Apple TV.

The company e-mailed invitations for the event to various media organizations on Wednesday. The message included a picture of a guitar and the time of the event. Apple did not release any information about what products would be involved.

Apple has released new iPods through previous similar events in September in anticipation of the holiday shopping season. This year, Apple may unveil a new iPod Touch with two cameras, similar to their recent iPhone 4 design. It will likely also update the iTunes music store and software.

Speculation about a new Apple TV is mixed. While many blogs are reporting that a refresh of the device will be announced, analysts say that it is unlikely to happen during next Wednesday’s event. According to Reuters, sources are saying that Apple is negotiating with major television networks, including ABC and NBC, in order to provide shows for purchase on iTunes. However, they also reported that the deal has not been completed, and none of the companies involved have commented on the rumors.

It has also been rumored that Apple will introduce a new online music service. In 2009, Apple took over a company that allowed users to stream music online rather than download individual songs. Apple has not confirmed the rumors.

Last September’s media event saw the return of Apple CEO Steve Jobs after he took a break to undergo a liver transplant. This year, the event will be held in San Francisco’s Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, previously used by Apple in April for the unveiling of the iPad.

Edmund White on writing, incest, life and Larry Kramer

Filed under: Uncategorized — Admin @ 3:07 pm

Thursday, November 8, 2007

What you are about to read is an American life as lived by renowned author Edmund White. His life has been a crossroads, the fulcrum of high-brow Classicism and low-brow Brett Easton Ellisism. It is not for the faint. He has been the toast of the literary elite in New York, London and Paris, befriending artistic luminaries such as Salman Rushdie and Sir Ian McKellen while writing about a family where he was jealous his sister was having sex with his father as he fought off his mother’s amorous pursuit.

The fact is, Edmund White exists. His life exists. To the casual reader, they may find it disquieting that someone like his father existed in 1950’s America and that White’s work is the progeny of his intimate effort to understand his own experience.

Wikinews reporter David Shankbone understood that an interview with Edmund White, who is professor of creative writing at Princeton University, who wrote the seminal biography of Jean Genet, and who no longer can keep track of how many sex partners he has encountered, meant nothing would be off limits. Nothing was. Late in the interview they were joined by his partner Michael Caroll, who discussed White’s enduring feud with influential writer and activist Larry Kramer.

Things To Consider When Purchasing Used Trailers Online

Filed under: Camping — Admin @ 3:08 pm

The particularly good thing about purchasing used equipment or a used trailer online is that if you do things properly you can often land yourself a great value, money saving deal. However, once you ve decided to go online to pick up a used trailer bargain you ll quickly see what a confusing business finding the ideal trailer to meet you exact needs can be. It’s hardly surprising given the sheer amount of trailer manufacturers, different types of trailers available and their suitability for a vast range of uses. There are many considerations to take into account before committing to a used trailer and listed below are some of the most important things that you should bear in mind.

You d do well as a starting point to make sure you do plenty of research on the various trailer manufacturers out there in the market place. Different manufacturers design a range of different trailers suitable for a variety of needs. Match up the functionality of the trailers on the market with what you plan to use the trailer for. Are you thinking about buying a cargo trailer, horse trailer or even a motorcycle trailer, a used trailer for transporting garden machinery or mulch or hardcore? How best do the manufacturers intended uses meet yours?

What size and capacity of used trailers do you need to safely and securely transport loads? What will you be transporting and what sort of weights will be involved? Should the trailer be open or enclosed? What sort of load bearing do you foresee the trailer having to deal with? Should it have a single axle, dual axle or possibly even three to four axles? What about access? For an enclosed trailer, do you require a ramp rear door, double rear doors or one single barn-type door? What will you be carrying and how will you want to access the trailer? Should the breaks be electric or hydraulic? Take into account the terrain where the machinery or items will be hauled. Are any special features needed to account for field conditions?

Ideally the trailer should be excellent condition. For the most part they re deigned to be sturdy working farm machinery so most nearly new models should be in decent condition. Do give any used trailer that you re considering purchasing as good a going over as possible and make sure they are thoroughly tested for safety and reliability.

Upgrading or replacing parts can make what at first seemed a great deal online investment much more expensive. Ensure the tyres, brakes and floor type are all in good working order. If the trailer has a ramp rear door check to see whether it s sprung-assisted as they can be extremely heavy. If you re considering a closed back trailer make sure that it s secure.

Purchasing used farm equipment online certainly offers a cost effective alternative to purchasing a new or custom made trailers. With a little preparation and by asking the vendor plenty of questions buying a used trailer online is a great way to get the exact type of trailer you need at a great price.

The Dixie Chicks won the award album in the song of Not Ready To Make Nice. Finally overcame controversy to dominate the 2007 Grammy Awards on Sunday night, winning five statuettes including the two coveted awards for Record and Song of the Year (for “Not Ready To Make Nice”). The country/rock trio, led by Martie Maguire, often criticized for their political views, also won for their album Taking the Long Way.

Mary J. Blige, who went into the Grammies with the most nominations, ended up winning three, while American Idol winner Carrie Underwood won two, including Best New Artist and for her song “Jesus Take The Wheel“. With completion of the “big three” music awards (which includes the American Music Awards held in November, and the Billboard Music Awards held in December), Blige and Underwood were the only two artists to sweep all three major awards this season.

California meat packing firm recalls 143M pounds of beef

Filed under: Uncategorized — Admin @ 3:33 pm

Sunday, February 17, 2008

I am dismayed at the in-humane handling of cattle that has resulted in the violation of food safety regulations at the Hallmark/Westland Meat Packing Company.

In a press release today, California-based Hallmark/Westland Meat Packing Co. indicated that it has voluntarily recalled just over 143 million pounds (65 million kilograms) of raw and frozen beef products, which is considered to be the largest single recall of beef products in U.S. history. The move follows an investigation by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) into allegations of animal cruelty and mishandling of cattle destined for the human food chain.

The USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) had determined that beef products produced by the Chino, California company were unfit for human consumption as the cattle had not received “complete and proper inspection.”

The recall has been designated as Class II, which the USDA describes as “a health hazard situation where there is a remote probability of adverse health consequences from the use of the product.”

On Friday, Secretary of Agriculture Ed Schafer indicated that charges had been laid against employees of the plant alleged to have taken part in the mistreatment of cattle. “Today [Friday], the San Bernardino District Attorney filed felony animal cruelty charges against two employees who were terminated by Hallmark/Westland Meat Packing Company,” said Schafer. “It is regrettable that these animals were mistreated and I am encouraged and supportive of these actions by the San Bernardino District Attorney in response to this mistreatment.”

The USDA learned of the possible inhumane handling of non-ambulatory (disabled) cattle at the packing plant on January 30 and has since suspended activities at the plant. “We continue to conduct a thorough investigation into whether any violations of food safety or additional humane handling regulations have occurred,” said Secretary Schafer in a press release. “On February 8, our Office of the Inspector General took the lead on the investigation. At that time, USDA extended the administrative hold on Hallmark/Westland Meat Packing Company products for the National School Lunch Program, the Emergency Food Assistance Program and the Food Distribution Program on Indian Reservations while the investigation continues,” said Schafer.

The FSIS reported that Hallmark/Westland had not contacted the FSIS public health veterinarian, as required, when cattle became ill or disabled after undergoing ante-mortem (slaughter) inspection, putting the company out of compliance with FSIS regulations. “Because the cattle did not receive complete and proper inspection FSIS has determined them to be unfit for human food and the company is conducting a recall,” explained Secretary Schafer.

The cruelty charges stem from an undercover video that reportedly showed sick cattle being moved by crews using forklifts.

“Words cannot accurately express how shocked and horrified I was at the depictions contained on the video that was taken by an individual who worked at our facility from October 3 thru November 14, 2007,” said Steve Mendell, President, Westland Meat Co. and Hallmark Meat Packing. “We have taken swift action regarding the two employees identified on the video and have already implemented aggressive measures to ensure all employees follow our humane handling policies and procedures. We are also cooperating with the USDA investigators on the allegations of inhumane handling treatment which is a serious breech of our company’s policies and training.”

The USDA stressed that it is “extremely unlikely” that the cattle involved were at risk for Bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) or mad-cow disease due to the employment of multiple safeguards. The USDA felt the recall was required, however, as the plant had allegedly violated USDA regulations.

The recall involves raw and frozen beef products produced on various dates from February 1, 2006 to February 2, 2008. For further information about the recall, consumers, media, and distributors are encouraged to contact Hallmark/Westland’s Plant Manager Stan Mendell or Food Safety Consultant Steve Sayer at (909) 590-3340 or the FSIS website, www.fsis.usda.gov.

The Duties Of A Security Officer

Filed under: Uncategorized — Admin @ 3:32 pm

byalex

As a security officer, it is your job to protect your employer’s building and other property. Security officers and guards work in many settings-;universities, banks, museums and other public buildings are all guarded. If you are considering becoming a security officer, read further for tips on what to expect.

Job Duties of Security OfficersYour daily job description depends on the type of facility which you’ll be protecting, be it an apartment complex, hospital or retail outlet, and whether you’re a stationary or mobile guard. In general, you’ll be responsible for the enforcement of rules, upholding public safety and responding to security issues. Your duties fall into three main categories: communication, response and prevention, which are described in greater detail below.

CommunicationTo be effective, Security Officers Kansas City must be able to communicate with citizens. For instance, you may have to help someone in trouble, offer directions to someone who’s lost, or render first aid to someone who’s hurt. Depending on your facility, you may be charged with checking people in and out of the building and searching them for dangerous or illicit objects.

ResponseYour responsibilities and duties during an incident may vary depending on whether you’re allowed to carry a weapon, and on state licensure laws. You might be asked to remove a disruptive person from the building, manage a crowd, or sweep for intruders. If you are guarding by yourself, you’ll likely handle other problems such as medical emergencies and fires by notifying the appropriate service and helping to contain the problem to the best of your ability.

PreventionYour presence may deter petty crimes such as assault, vandalism and theft. As a security officer, you will patrol the entire premises, watching for anyone behaving unusually or causing a security issue. You may also be assigned to a specific post, where you will watch security monitors; if you are protecting a closed facility, you might need a key card to prove that you’ve checked key areas, and you’re likely to be asked for a written report at the end of each shift.

Those wanting to become Security Officers Kansas City will need a high-school diploma or its equivalent, but in some cases you may need to pass an exam, complete training and submit to drug screens and background checks. Some employers seek applicants with prior military or law enforcement experience, but most offer on the job training to qualified people.

Surgeons reattach boy’s three severed limbs

Filed under: Uncategorized — Admin @ 3:30 pm

Tuesday, March 29, 2005A team of Australian surgeons yesterday reattached both hands and one foot to 10-year-old Perth boy, Terry Vo, after a brick wall which collapsed during a game of basketball fell on him, severing the limbs. The wall gave way while Terry performed a slam-dunk, during a game at a friend’s birthday party.

The boy was today awake and smiling, still in some pain but in good spirits and expected to make a full recovery, according to plastic surgeon, Mr Robert Love.

“What we have is parts that are very much alive so the reattached limbs are certainly pink, well perfused and are indeed moving,” Mr Love told reporters today.

“The fact that he is moving his fingers, and of course when he wakes up he will move both fingers and toes, is not a surprise,” Mr Love had said yesterday.

“The question is more the sensory return that he will get in the hand itself and the fine movements he will have in the fingers and the toes, and that will come with time, hopefully. We will assess that over the next 18 months to two years.

“I’m sure that he’ll enjoy a game of basketball in the future.”

The weight and force of the collapse, and the sharp brick edges, resulted in the three limbs being cut through about 7cm above the wrists and ankle.

Terry’s father Tan said of his only child, the injuries were terrible, “I was scared to look at him, a horrible thing.”

The hands and foot were placed in an ice-filled Esky and rushed to hospital with the boy, where three teams of medical experts were assembled, and he was given a blood transfusion after experiencing massive blood loss. Eight hours of complex micro-surgery on Saturday night were followed by a further two hours of skin grafts yesterday.

“What he will lose because it was such a large zone of traumatised skin and muscle and so on, he will lose some of the skin so he’ll certainly require lots of further surgery regardless of whether the skin survives,” said Mr Love said today.

The boy was kept unconscious under anaesthetic between the two procedures. In an interview yesterday, Mr Love explained why:

“He could have actually been woken up the next day. Because we were intending to take him back to theatre for a second look, to look at the traumatised skin flaps, to close more of his wounds and to do split skin grafting, it was felt the best thing to do would be to keep him stable and to keep him anaesthetised.”

Professor Wayne Morrison, director of the respected Bernard O’Brien Institute of Microsurgery and head of plastic and hand surgery at Melbourne’s St Vincent’s Hospital, said he believed the operation to be a world first.
