Do You Only Have 2 Sets of Teeth? Scientists Don’t Think So

by

Dr. John CohenWe were more than happy to lose our teeth as children. After all, the tooth fairy did leave behind some monies underneath our pillows. However as adults nothing is worse than losing a tooth. It’s life changing really. Almost everyone who is missing one or more teeth at older ages look towards dental implants or even dentures to help fix the gap in their smile. Are you missing a tooth? If you are, chances are you’ve been looking or already have found a solution to restore your teeth. Scientists believe stem cell research is the future of modern dentistry, here’s why. The Future of Stem Cells for Dental Treatment Looks BrightDentist promise dental implants to be the number one solution for missing teeth. While that’s true, modern dentistry isn’t going to slow down for dental implants. It didn’t for dentures! This is where stem cell research comes in!In 2010, professors and researchers at Columbia University found a way to create a tooth using stem cell DNA. This was a breakthrough, one that turned the modern dentistry world on its head. With stem cells, we essentially have an unlimited set of natural teeth! For patients, that’s everything to them. Instead of waiting six whole months to complete a dental implant procedure, stem cell treatment takes only a third of that time! As a bonus, you won’t have to worry about awkward cleanings or slippage at inopportune times. Since they are natural teeth, it takes only the works of a toothbrush, floss and mouthwash to clean them properly. Stem Cell Research Versus Modern Day Dental ImplantsWhen comparing them to dental implants, stem cell teeth do one thing they cannot. That one thing is restoring a chemical balance. What we’re talking about, are the chemical signals that relay from our teeth when they come into contact with one another. We see this the most when we’re chewing. When you’re missing a tooth, that signal stops and the remainder of your teeth awkwardly disposition themselves to cover the gap, leading to utter pain. In turn, this causes those teeth to grow weak and may cause them to loosen and fall out too. A stem cell tooth can prevent that, by restoring the chemical balance needed to keep your teeth in their place. Artificial teeth can stop your other teeth from shifting, but they don’t fully integrate like a natural tooth would. Why Aren’t We Seeing Them Just Yet?There’s so many benefits to having stem cell treatment, but the matter of fact is it’s too expensive. The cost of the treatment and the technology is too expensive for many dentist, who in turn pass on the cost of the procedure to their patients. No one is looking to spend thousands of dollars on a procedure they know works, but there are more affordable dental options to choose from. The goal though, is for the price of it to drop down so everyone can afford this unique and high-quality dental service. In addition, the use of stem cells continues to remain in laboratories, for good reason. Stem cells research is taboo, as they are the building blocks of our biology. Unsurprisingly, people believe that stem cell research is playing with the powers of god (especially in the United States). For now, researchers and scientists are testing with mice until they’re given the thumbs up to take in human subjects. This doesn’t mean we won’t being seeing stem cell research progress and open a new possibility to restore a missing tooth. We’ve come so far in medicine and technology, it’s only a matter of time before stem cells become the biggest thing in dentistry.

U.S. TV networks look to past for future programming

Tuesday, March 22, 2005

Los Angeles, California — Four of six national television broadcast networks recently wooed potential advertisers for the 2005-2006 season with programming offerings in the new development phase. These included NBC, Fox, ABC and The WB. Two other networks, CBS and UPN, plan to preview their offerings March 24.

After four years of focusing on high-profile reality television, network executives are turning to the past for inspiration on scripted series. Some networks said they are “more consciously aggressive about developing shows” that recall such classics as Taxi and Barney Miller, Craig Erwich, a programming executive for Fox, told USA Today. In the same report, Kevin Reilly, NBC entertainment chief said, “I don’t think the answer has to be that it’s groundbreaking or something you’ve never seen before.”

But at least one ad buyer had reservations about the rear-view mirror technique. “Every network seems to be looking back rather than forward for programming ideas. The reminiscence factor may be good if you are looking for an older audience, but it may not be a way to bring in the younger audiences,” Laura Caraccioli-Davis, senior vice president and director of Starcom Entertainment told Mediaweek magazine.

Pruning Popular Fruit Trees

Filed under: Permaculture Magazine — @ 3:56 pm

By John Hoffman

Pruning an Apple Tree

The primary purpose of pruning any fruit tree is to promote growth and stimulate a quality harvest and fruit production. An added benefit of pruning is that it clears away parts of a tree that may have been by a severe storm, disease or insects.

INSTRUCTIONS

:

(For this pruning job you’ll need sharp pruning shears)

1. Mature apple trees are pruned during the winter before the new growth starts. January and February is the best time for pruning.

2. This step takes a bit of creativity or lacking that, research to find a good example of a healthy apple tree. The tree should have only one central, upright trunk with limbs growing outward in a perpendicular (parallel to the ground) direction. This is the pattern you used when deciding what branches are to be cut.

3. Remember, when making your cuts you want to minimize any damage to the bark of the tree. Closely inspect branches and remove those that exhibit evidence of disease or have an insect infestation.

4. To ensure that sunlight can reach all the leaves and fruit, make sure there is plenty of vertical space between limbs. Branches that are too close to the above or below should be removed. The bottom limbs should be approximately 24 to 36 inches above the ground.

5. When you find a healthy limb that is spaced well but growing vertical, it is better not to cut it off. Train the limb to grow outward by carefully hanging a weight approximately half way along the branch. The weight will do the training for you by gently forcing the limb to grow outward.

6. Don’t leave the cutoffs on the ground around the apple tree. Remove all the wood and , if permitted, burn it to ensure that all disease or insect larvae are destroyed. This prevents possible re-contamination. Also, do not forget to disinfect your tools, before using them for another pruning job.

I would like to mention that pruning an apple tree during the winter months will encourage summer growth. If the tree is growing too large for its designated area, prune it during the summer months. Apple trees are pruned annually.

Pruning an Asian Pear Tree

There is a slight difference of pruning techniques between a young Asian pear tree and an established mature tree. I have taken the liberty of describing how to prune/train a young Asian pear tree. Using proper pruning on a young tree, you will create a healthier mature tree, producing more fruit. Generally speaking Asian pears are pruned and maintained in a similar fashion to many apple trees and traditional pear trees. An olden Chinese saying, ‘Patience is Golden’ is very apropo for a with care and patience your tree will reach optimal size, shape and health.

INSTRUCTIONS

:

(you will need sharp pruning shears or pruning saw)

1. Your initial Asian pear planting will usually be a single whip which is pruned over the first 5 years to create a central leader form.

2. The first spring after planting, remove any new branches below 2 feet. If you planted the tree in the spring, then it would be the tree’s second spring

3. The third spring, remove any branches below 2 feet. Additionally, select 3 to 5 of the strongest branches and keep those. Remove smaller or weaker branches to ensure growth energy is directed to the stronger branches. Cut out any branches that cross. Remember, in your pruning, to keep the tree balanced.

4. The fourth spring, continue to remove crossing branches and, naturally, branches below 2 feet. Prune off branches that are growing downward, we want to have the tree grow upward.

5. The fifth spring, again, removed crossing branches and those growing downward. This is the year you have graduated to general maintenance pruning.

Now you know why I said ‘patience’. Remember once your tree has reached the desired overall size, pruning is done best between late summer and late winter. Don’t forget to make your pruning cuts at an angle to discourage water from collecting on any open wounds.

Pruning a Cherry Tree

A properly pruned cherry tree will achieve best growth and yield the most fruit. There is a catch! Cherry trees are somewhat delicate and usually only live about 20 years under the best conditions. You must exercise caution when chopping off their branches. Cherry trees must be pruned or they will die of starvation because they cannot support their own unfettered growth. The pruning process should be treated like surgery.

INSTRUCTIONS

:

(you will need pruning shears and wound sealer or pruning paste)

1. Prune the cherry tree in the summer, after the fruit harvest. While most fruit trees are pruned in the winter, cherry trees are highly susceptible to a disease called Silver Leaf which strikes in the winter.

2. Cut off any dead or diseased branches. This will aid the tree in focusing on growing strong, flourishing branches and prevent diseases and bacteria.

3. Check at the base of the tree and remove any smaller seedlings that may be growing. One could dig them up;however, to eliminate any chance of damaging the tree’s root structure, it is safer to simply cut them off. Remember, they cannot stay there because they will die in the shade of the big tree and sap nutrients out of the soil that the tree needs so desperately.

4. Your cuts should be at an angle about 1/8 of inch above the bud. This prevents the branch from continuing to grow and not effect the general health of the tree. Angular cuts keeps water from sitting on the cut and creating an environment that will result in bacterial infection or disease.

5. All pruning cuts must sealed with pruning paste of a non-asphalt base. Pruning paste is to a cherry tree what a band aid is to us. It prevents the wound from getting infected.

Closing thought, try to shape your tree into a ‘V’ shape or an ‘open vase configuration.

Pruning a Lemon Tree

Lemon trees in a garden are a pure delight. In warm climates, you plant them in the ground and for those of you who happen to live in colder climates, lemon tree can be grown in containers. This gives one the option, with cold climate, put them into the garage or a greenhouse. Make no mistake, lemon trees should be and must be pruned for health and fruit abundance.

INSTRUCTIONS

:

(you will need sharp pruning shears, pruning saw)

1. When you begin to prune a lemon tree make sure not to cut more than 1/3 of the plant back every year.

2. Your pruning starts in the first or second year to begin training and make sure to trim back only 1/3.

3. Cut out all random branches to permit more air and sunlight reaching the main plant. This ensures that you’ll enjoy larger and more lush lemons. With pruning you get better fruit and you can train the tree to be much fuller and stronger.

4. Rule of thumb when pruning trees is to trim at an angle.

5. When cutting a larger branch to make a partial cut on the underside of the branch and then make your cut from the top of the branch approximately 1 further up from the undercut. This prevents the cut branch from ripping and damaging the bark of the tree.

6. Best time for pruning your lemon tree is right after it’s produced fruit in the fall and this will permit it to generate some new growth. One can prune it in the middle of winter as well, as long as it’s not growing or producing flowers.

In closing, remember not to trim too much and leave at least 3 to 5 main branches. Trim out the rest. Rest your laurels, and watch it grow, filling in those main branches and producing better fruit then if you had let it grow wild.

Pruning Orange Trees

Do you know what the best asset you can add to your landscape? Right, an orange tree! Not only do they present a magnificent appearance, they emit a wonderful aroma and give you a healthy delicious fruit. When an orange tree is blooming it fills the air with a delicate sweet aroma that is pleasing to all. An orange tree does not require a lot of pruning after they have been established.

INSTRUCTIONS

:

(you’ll need heavy-duty gloves, pruning shears, long-handled loppers, rubbing alcohol, optional-pruning saw, ladder, whitewash solution)

1. It is very important to prune your tree at the best time of the year. The date can be between January through March, dependent on you specific location. You will only have to prune every other year and must be accomplished before the blossoms appear.

2. Make a detailed inspection of your orange tree to decide what you are going to do. Watch out for any dead or diseased branches. Check the lower trunk are for any suckers that must be removed. Check the branches for crossing near the middle of the tree. Check your tree from several different angles.

3. Before you use your pruning tools, sterilize them with rubbing alcohol. This should be done before each orange tree is pruned, assuming you have more than one. One does not want to spread disease among the trees.

4. Start by removing any suckers that may be growing by making a vertical cut near the trunk of the tree. Remove all branches that crossing over the center. This opens up the center of the tree to sun light and air circulation. Remove all sickly branches. Whenever possible use your shears and pruning saw for larger cuts. These cuts should be protected from sunburn which is accomplished by not removing a lot of the upper branches unless it is absolutely necessary.

A bit of advice, if you feel you need to do a large amount of pruning on your orange tree, you should spread out over more than one year. Cut no more than a of the tree at any one time or you could hinder its growth and fruit production.

Use a ladder to cut any upper branches that are not within easy reach.

Last but least, do not use pruning paint on your orange tree. If you absolutely feel that something has to be done to prevent sunburn on the cuts, a watered-down whitewash solution should be used.

I would like to state that the above pruning instructions for the various fruit trees and as close as possible to be generic in nature. This means you must do a bit of research as to how the instructions pertain to your particular area. For example, I live in a relatively temperate zone which has very few frost days and no snow. However, in the summer we experience triple digit temperatures and a blazing sun for a major portion of the summer. Therefore, I must leave more foliage on my pruned trees for sunburn protection.

Happy pruning.

Black vulture population targeted for reduction at Virginia boat launch

Monday, December 19, 2005

A Virginia recreation and fishing boat launch on the James River near the Dominion Virginia Power plant at Dutch Gap is the scene of too many Black Vultures, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the Virginia Department of Inland Game and Fisheries.

In 2002, more than 350 Black vultures were killed at Dutch Gap in an effort to reduce their numbers to a level of a couple dozen birds. But they made a quick come back in the area, and during this past week a hundred of the birds have been disposed of by a shot to their head with a pellet gun.

The USDA reports that both Black Vultures (Coragyps atratus), along with their close relatives called the Turkey Vulture (Cathartes aura), are experiencing population increases stretching well over the last 10 years.

The species is increasingly a problem by growing into being a nuisance, as well as a threat to health and safety concerns. The presence of the birds in large numbers, at places they roost, can cause damage to property as they peck and claw at construction surfaces, and cause unsanitary human health conditions from the defecation and regurgitation of the birds. Their presense at landfills, often in near proximity to airports, is a problem for airplanes during take-off and landing.

At the entrance to the Dutch Gap boat launch parking lot, a large yellow warning sign is posted that reads: “Please be aware of possible damage to vehicles and trailers due to the large Black Vulture population currently inhabiting this parking area. Because the Black Vulture is a federally protected species, Chesterfield County is working with the U.S. Deptartment of Agriculture and the Virginia Department of Inland Games and Fisheries to resolve the problem. You can help by disposing of all litter (even non-food items such as cigarette butts) in trash barrels. Thank you for your cooperation.” The vultures reportedly perch on vehicles and scratch the paint, and for some reason are going after windshield wiper blades.

Vultures have shown an ability to adapt to residential and business settings. The bird, with a 4-foot adult wing span, can be seen gliding through the air at virtually any time of day in Chesterfield and Prince George counties in central Virginia.

As of 10:00 p.m EST November 8, 2006, the Democratic Party is projected to have gained control of both the United States House of Representatives and the United States Senate in the 2006 United States general elections. MSNBC projects that the Democrats now control 234 seats in the House of Representatives, 16 more seats than the 218 needed to control the House of Representatives as all 435 seats were up for election. In the Senate, where the balance of power is closer, one-third of all seats were up for grab. As of 10:00 p.m. EST, AP and Reuters were projecting that the Democrats had picked up all six seats they needed to retake the Senate, including the seats of incumbents Rick Santorum (Penn.), Lincoln Chafee (R.I.), Jim Talent (Missouri), Mike DeWine (Ohio), John Tester (Montana), and Jim Webb (VA). The Tester victory by less than 3,000 votes was projected at approximately 2 p.m. EST after the State of Montana announced the results of overnight recounts. Democrat Jim Webb has prevailed in that race by slightly more than 7,000 votes, though his opponent has not conceded and a recount may still occur.

Wikinews interviews Duncan Campbell, co-founder of wheelchair rugby

Friday, September 7, 2012

London, England — On Wednesday, Wikinews interviewed Duncan Campbell, one of the creators of wheelchair rugby.

((Laura Hale)) You’re Duncan Campbell, and you’re the founder of…

Duncan Campbell: One of the founders of wheelchair rugby.

((Laura Hale)) And you’re from Canada, eh?

Duncan Campbell: Yes, I’m from Canada, eh! (laughter)

((Laura Hale)) Winnipeg?

Duncan Campbell: Winnipeg, Manitoba.

((Laura Hale)) You cheer for — what’s that NHL team?

Duncan Campbell: I cheer for the Jets!

((Laura Hale)) What sort of Canadian are you?

Duncan Campbell: A Winnipeg Jets fan! (laughter)

((Laura Hale)) I don’t know anything about ice hockey. I’m a Chicago Blackhawks fan.

((Hawkeye7)) Twenty five years ago…

Duncan Campbell: Thirty five years ago!

((Laura Hale)) They said twenty five in the stadium…

Duncan Campbell: I know better.

((Hawkeye7)) So it was 1977.

((Laura Hale)) You look very young.

Duncan Campbell: Thank you. We won’t get into how old I am.

((Hawkeye7)) So how did you invent the sport?

Duncan Campbell: I’ve told this story so many times. It was a bit of a fluke in a way, but there were five of us. We were all quadriplegic, that were involved in sport, and at that time we had the Canadian games for the physically disabled. So we were all involved in sports like table tennis or racing or swimming. All individual sports. And the only team sport that was available at that time was basketball, wheelchair basketball. But as quadriplegics, with hand dysfunction, a bit of arm dysfunction, if we played, we rode the bench. We’d never get into the big games or anything like that. So we were actually going to lift weights one night, and the volunteer who helped us couldn’t make it. So we went down to the gym and we started throwing things around, and we tried a few things, and we had a volleyball. We kind of thought: “Oh! This is not bad. This is a lot of fun.” And we came up with the idea in a night. Within one night.

((Hawkeye7)) So all wheelchair rugby players are quadriplegics?

Duncan Campbell: Yes. All wheelchair rugby players have to have a disability of some kind in all four limbs.

((Laura Hale)) When did the classification system for wheelchair rugby kick in?

Duncan Campbell: It kicked in right away because there was already a classification system in place for wheelchair basketball. We knew basketball had a classification system, and we very consciously wanted to make that all people with disabilities who were quadriplegics got to play. So if you make a classification system where the people with the most disability are worth more on the floor, and you create a system where there are only so many points on the floor, then the people with more disability have to play. And what that does is create strategy. It creates a role.

((Hawkeye7)) Was that copied off wheelchair basketball?

Duncan Campbell: To some degree, yes.

((Laura Hale)) I assume you’re barracking for Canada. Have they had any classification issues? That made you

Duncan Campbell: You know, I’m not going to… I can’t get into that in a major way in that there’s always classification issues. And if you ask someone from basketball, there’s classification issues. If you ask someone from swimming… There’s always classification issues. The classifiers have the worst job in the world, because nobody’s ever satisfied with what they do. But they do the best they can. They’re smart. They know what they’re doing. If the system needs to change, the athletes will, in some way, encourage it to change.

((Laura Hale)) Do you think the countries that have better classifiers… as someone with an Australian perspective they’re really good at classification, and don’t get theirs overturned, whereas the Americans by comparison have had a number of classification challenges coming in to these games that they’ve lost. Do you think that having better classifiers makes a team better able to compete at an international level?

Duncan Campbell: What it does is ensures that you practice the right way. Because you know the exact classifications of your players then you’re going to lineups out there that are appropriate and fit the classification. If your classifications are wrong then you may train for six months with a lineup that becomes invalid when that classification. So you want to have good classifiers, and you want to have good classes.

((Laura Hale)) When you started in 1977, I’ve seen pictures of the early wheelchairs. I assume that you were playing in your day chair?

Duncan Campbell: Yes, all the time. And we had no modifications. And day chairs at that time were folding chairs. They were Earjays or Stainless. That’s all the brands there were. The biggest change in the game has been wheelchairs.

((Laura Hale)) When did you retire?

Duncan Campbell: I never retired. Still play. I play locally. I play in the club level all the time.

((Laura Hale)) When did you get your first rugby wheelchair?

Duncan Campbell: Jesus, that’s hard for me to even think about. A long time ago. I would say maybe twenty years ago.

((Laura Hale)) Were you involved in creating a special chair, as Canadians were pushing the boundaries and creating the sport?

Duncan Campbell: To a degree. I think everybody was. Because you wanted the chair that fit you. Because they are all super designed to an individual. Because it allows you to push better, allows you to turn better. Allows you to use your chair in better ways on the court. Like you’ve noticed that the defensive chairs are lower and longer. That’s because the people that are usually in a defensive chair have a higher disability, which means they have less balance. So they sit lower, which means they can use their arms better, and longer so they can put screens out and set ticks for those high point players who are carrying the ball. It’s very much strategic.

((Hawkeye7)) I’d noticed that in wheelchair basketball the low point player actually gets more court time…

Duncan Campbell: …because that allows the high point player to play. And its the same in this game. Although in this game there’s two ways to go. You can go a high-low lineup, which is potentially two high point players and two very low point players, which is what Australia does right now with Ryley Batt and the new kid Chris Bond. They have two high point players, and two 0.5 point players. It makes a very interesting scenario for, say, the US, who use four mid-point players. In that situation, all four players can carry the ball; in the Australian situation, usually only two of them can carry the ball.

((Laura Hale)) Because we know you are going soon, the all-important question: can Canada beat the Australians tonight?

Duncan Campbell: Of course they are. (laughter)

((Laura Hale)) Because Australians love to gamble, what’s your line on Canada?

Duncan Campbell: It’s not a big line! I’m not putting a big line on it! (laughter) I’d say it’s probably 6–5.

((Hawkeye7)) Is your colour commentary for the Canadian broadcast?

Duncan Campbell: That was for the IPC. I did the GB–US game this morning. I do the Sweden–Australia game tomorrow at two. And then I’m doing the US–France game on the last day.

((Laura Hale)) Are you happy with the level of coverage the Canadians are providing your sport?

Duncan Campbell: No.

((Laura Hale)) Thank you for an honest answer.

Duncan Campbell: Paralympic Sports TV is their own entity. They webcast, but they’re not a Canadian entity. Our Canadian television is doing… can I swear?

((Laura Hale)) Yeah! Go ahead!

Duncan Campbell: No! (laughter) They’re only putting on an hour a day. A highlight package, which to me is…

((Hawkeye7)) It’s better than the US.

Duncan Campbell: Yes, I’ve heard it’s better than the US. At the same time, it’s crap. You have here [in Great Britain], they’ve got it on 18 hours a day, and it’s got good viewership. When are we going to learn in North America that viewership is out there for it? How many times do we have to demonstrate it? We had the Paralympics in Vancouver two years ago, the Winter Paralympics, and we had crappy coverage there. There was an actual outburst demand to put the opening ceremonies on TV because they weren’t going to do it. And they had to do it, because everybody complained. So they did it, but they only did it in BC, in our home province, where they were holding it. The closing ceremonies they broadcast nationally because the demand was so high. But they still haven’t changed their attitudes.

((Laura Hale)) I have one last question: what did it mean for you when they had a Canadian flag bearer who was a wheelchair rugby player?

Duncan Campbell: I recruited that guy. It was fantastic. I recruited him. Found him playing hockey. And that guy has put in so much time and effort into the game. He absolutely deserves it. No better player.

((Laura Hale)) Thank you!

((Hawkeye7)) Thank you! Much appreciated.

Oldest ex-Major League Baseball player, Billy Werber dies at age 100

Billy Werber, third baseman in Major League Baseball, has died at the age of 100. Werber died of natural causes on Thursday, January 22, 2009 at an assisted living center in Charlotte, North Carolina. He was moved there after his health deteriorated a month ago.

His son said that when admitted, Werber refused to eat solid foods and would only drink liquids. “He just refused to eat and that was his plan,” Bill Werber Jr. told the Associated Press. He added that his father was “sharp up until four weeks ago”.

Born William Murray Werber on June 20, 1908 in Berwyn Heights, Maryland, he played for the New York Yankees from (1930, 1933), the Boston Red Sox from (1933-1936), the Philadelphia Athletics from (1937-1938), Cincinnati Reds from (1939-1941) and the New York Giants from (1942).

In 1934, Werber became the starting third baseman of the Red Sox. He responded with a career-high .321 batting average, including 200 hits; led the American League with 40 stolen bases, and posted double digits in doubles (41), triples (10) and home runs (11). He led the league in stolen bases in 1935 (29) and 1937 (35). Boston traded him to the Philadelphia Athletics for the 1937 season, and he joined the Cincinnati Reds in 1939.

In an 11-season career, Werber was a .271 hitter with 78 home runs and 539 RBI in 1,295 games. One of the most aggressive baserunners of the 1930s, probably the most aggressive next to Ben Chapman, he stole 215 bases. He was inducted into the Cincinnati Reds Hall of Fame in 1961.

His wife Kathryn ‘Tat’ Werber died in 2000, after she and Werber had been married 70 years. Bill Werber Jr. says that his father is to be cremated and services, which will be open to the public, will be held on the weekend of January 31 through February 1.

Applied Statistics for product and process evaluation in design and manufacturing

by

John RobinsonEvaluating product and processes is an imperative for almost all design and/or manufacturing companies. These are the reasons for which this evaluation needs to be made: oManaging risksoValidation of processesoEstablishing product/process specifications to QC to such specificationsoMonitoring compliance to such specifications Lack of proper and thorough grasp of and correct implementation of statistical methods leads a company to having to face significant increases in its complaint rates, scrap rates, and time-to-market. As a result, such companies churn out poor quality in their products, leading to lowered customer satisfaction levels, severely impacting their bottom line.A learning session to help understand statistical methodsIn order to help professionals in process and manufacturing meet challenges associated with statistical methods with greater confidence, GlobalCompliancePanel, a highly reputable provider of professional trainings for the regulatory compliance areas, is organizing a highly educative two-day seminar on the topic, Applied Statistics, with Emphasis on Verification, Validation, and Risk Management, in R&D, Manufacturing, and QA/QC.John N. Zorich, Statistical Consultant & Trainer, Ohlone College & SV Polytechnic, will be the Director at this seminar, which has been pre-approved by RAPS as eligible for up to 12 credits towards a participant’s RAC recertification upon full completion. To enroll for this seminar, participants can log on to http://www.globalcompliancepanel.com/control/globalseminars/~product_id=900535SEMINAR?applied-statistics-QA-QC-Seattle-Washington. Hands on approach to statistical methods toolbox The aim of this seminar is to offer a hands-on approach by which the participants could comprehend the ways to interpret and use a standard tool-box of statistical methods that consist of confidence intervals, t-tests, Normal K-tables, Normality tests, confidence/reliability calculations, AQL sampling plans, measurement equipment analysis, and Statistical Process Control. The Director will equip the seminar delegates with clarity on how to accurately employ and administer statistical methods, which can be used as a launchpad for introducing new products. This two-day session will help participants understand the proper way of avoiding issues relating to these aspects of statistical methods. John will explain how to apply statistics to manage risk in R&D, QA/QC, and Manufacturing by giving real life examples derived mainly from the medical device design/manufacturing industry.

The 2-day seminar explains how to apply statistics to manage risks and verify/validate processes in R&D, QA/QC, and Manufacturing, with examples derived mainly from the medical device design/manufacturing industry. The flow of topics over the 2 days is as follows:

ISO standards and FDA/MDD regulations regarding the use of statistics.

Basic vocabulary and concepts, including distributions such as binomial, hypergeometric, and Normal, and transformations into Normality.Statistical Process ControlStatistical methods for Design VerificationStatistical methods for Product/Process QualificationMetrology: the statistical analysis of measurement uncertainty, and how it is used to establish QC specificationsHow to craft “statistically valid conclusion statements” (e.g., for reports)Summary, from a risk management perspective

Almost all design and/or manufacturing companies evaluate product and processes either to manage risks, to validate processes, to establish product/process specifications, to QC to such specifications, and/or to monitor compliance to such specifications.

The various statistical methods used to support such activities can be intimidating. If used incorrectly or inappropriately, statistical methods can result in new products being launched that should have been kept in R&D; or, conversely, new products not being launched that, if analyzed correctly, would have met all requirements. In QC, mistakenly chosen sample sizes and inappropriate statistical methods may result in purchased product being rejected that should have passed, and vice-versa.

This seminar provides a practical approach to understanding how to interpret and use more than just a standard tool-box of statistical methods; topics include: Confidence intervals, t-tests, Normal K-tables, Normality tests, Confidence/reliability calculations, Reliability plotting (for extremely non-normal data), AQL sampling plans, Metrology (i.e., statistical analysis of measurement uncertainty ), and Statistical Process Control. Without a clear understanding and correct implementation of such methods, a company risks not only significantly increasing its complaint rates, scrap rates, and time-to-market, but also risks significantly reducing its product and service quality, its customer satisfaction levels, and its profit margins.
